Default cam / cam chain

2014 street glide special, with 40000 miles.. i must admit, even when i bought it,, i thought it was a little clangy, but now,, speeding up slowing down giving throttle again,, its like you can hear a chain clang or bang for a second or two, its like its stretch out and has to much slack, are there plastic cam guides that wear down, the motor seems to spit and sputter sometimes from a dead stop, has new plugs, service like it should be, has extended warranty, harley dealer said, it has to blow up before they can do anyting... whats your thoughts on this... suunnii4u@aol.com

What you’re hearing is probably coming from the primary.

There are two plastic shoes to tension the chain in the cam chest. I had mine changed last winter with 35K miles on my bike. My indy said the inner was worn and I was probably good for another 5-7K miles. The indy said the problem is when the shoes disintegrate the pieces can block the oil passages or oil pump. A friend who does his own repairs like this said he changed his around 45K and they were worn to the point of just about letting go.

It is critical that you include the year of the bikes you are talking about. 1999 to 2005 had crap tensioners and in 2006 they changed one of them. In 2007
they upgraded the whole cam chest and there are very few problems reported since the change. 1999-2006 can be fully upgraded to the new system.
