and just an FYI the HD branded sena's are the only ones that fully integrate with the WHIM on the boom audio.

Default Harley Sena 20S Evo

Yes the bikes need a cable or WHIM (wireless Harley interface module ? ) to make the 20s be fully compatible with the touring bikes, and it has to be the HD Sena 20s if you want to stream the music in stereo. I've had that setup since last fall but until this spring I couldn't get the bike to communicate with the Sena. Finally got pissed off and called Sena. Found out you have to pair the Sena with the bike in the phone mode. It was an easy fix once I found that out. Now, every time I fire up the bike and the headset is turned on it automatically pairs.
The only downside that I have found is the endurance of the battery in the headset. With my old SMH10 it was about 8-9 hours but with the 20s it will start sending messages about low headset battery after 4 hours. That really shouldn't be an issue as the HD kit comes with a coiled cord with a cigarette lighter plug attached so you can ride and charge at the same time with the headset on.

Not only that, but you need one "module" (freewire?) thing for each Sena headset, at about $250 per module. Add in the cost of 2 Sena 20 series headsets, and you you're looking at close to $1000.

Harley's WHIM module costs about the same as or a bit more than one freewire module but it can pair two headsets. And the Harley Sena 20's are about the same cost as the Non Harley Sena headsets, so in the case of wanting two headsets, HD's option may be a bit less expensive. Even factoring in the the dealer's charge to activate the WHIM module, still competitive cost wise, I'd bargain.

Yes. Sena makes a module called "Freewire" that will allow your Sena headset to interface with your BOOM audio. You need one Freewire module for each Sena headset you want to integrate with your BOOM audio system.

Harley also makes it's WHIM module, that does the same thing, except that the WHIM module will allow 2 headsets to pair so you only need one WHIM module for two headsets. But the HD dealer needs to perform a quick configuration to activate the WHIM module.

Whichever route you choose, due your research to see exactly what pieces are compatible and what their limits might be. It's confusing to learn.

Regardless, the Non Harley branded Sena headsets will not get full functionality with the BOOM audio- you need the Harley Sena units to hear music in stereo.

My buddy's wife bought a bluetooth half helmet for about $50 from Amazon during their last big promotion. Since my buddy had no bluetooth at all for his bike, he ended up having a HD dealer install the WHIM module, and he also bought one Harley Sena 20 headset for himself.

His wife is able to hear music and route guidance over her bluetooth half helmet, but they cannot figure out how to pair the Harley Sena headset to the Half Helmet headset- so they can't talk to each other.
Go figure.

The bluetooth helmet by itself will not interface with your boom audio. You need HD's WHIM module to bridge that gap. Or something like Sena's Freewire device.
