OK, after the dealer had a chance to take a look at it here's what they have told me; the cam tensioners were completely worn out which caused damage to the cam plate oil pump etc. The fix, installation of a Cam Kit, new plate bearing oil pump, push rods, sprocket retention kit, cam drive, all for the tidy sum of $1736.00. I must say it runs like new. They say that this isn't uncommon at all on motors with 66K plus miles, but that it's now brought to the latest mod that Harley has for that model year.

If they were still the original tensioners, they did pretty good making 66K.
Even if it's been updated to the later hydraulic type tensioner, I would still check both of them every 30K - from what I've been hearing.

They were indeed updated to hydraulic and I was told by the mechanic the same thing that it might be a good idea to do a check every 30K or so miles.
