could not have said it better, so true. add to it that same bike, same shocks does not mean same ride for every rider.
I understand limited finances. unfortunately purchases made with funds available have not resulted in that final satisfaction. All too often the same people are upgrading the 1st purchase with 2nd and some with 3rd shocks, total cost now above what a onetime expensive proven shock would have cost by biting the bullet and not compromising with fingers crossed. Buy the one you believe will work for you, not the one you can afford today.
I think this is what I have been more afraid of than anything else when it comes to up grades.
Ok,I'll tell u what I did.I bought some Bitubos from dk customs. You can get on their site and read about them yourself.I have a 16 SGS with the so called improved shock from HD.They sucked to me..so I bought the Bitubos(made in italy)Dk will set them up for you(like they all will).I was impressed right off the bat. They are around the $500 range.Little bit cheaper than ohlins and progressive.
I've had the Progressive 944's for a few years, they're much better than stock but there are more choices now for the money so there may be better out there at the same price point.

+1 for the Bitubos. Good shocks and big ride and handling improvement.
Just traded a 2012 street glide with the Ohlins 2-2b shocks on it for a 2019 street glide special, I left the 2-2s on the the bike and kept the stock shocks on the new one as they rode every bit as good or maybe even better.

Both my wife and I are on FLD's (Dyna Switchback). I am running Hagon Nitro 13" shocks and I ordered 13" Bitubos for her bike. For the $, the Bitubo and Hagons are hard to beat. Both are in the $500-$600 range, both feature adjustable preload and damping and both are built to a specified weight. There are other options in the same price range. Regardless of brand, once you're in the $500 range, suspension capability improves very noticeably. Someone mentioned the Progressive 412's. Only experience I have is my friend's Sportster has them. He lent me his bike to do a tour and I put 900+ miles on that tour. I'd advise you to save your money and get the $500'ish range shocks. I didn't see much of a difference with the 412's as compared to the Hagon Nitro's/Bitubo's.
Well living from direct deposit to direct deposit ioi payday to payday I am on a very tight budget so I am thinking Progressive 412, unless someone can talk me out of it. If I wanted to borrow out of my 401k I could have the best Ohlins but for now, savings are more important than comfort. If someone knows of a cheaper set of Ohlins 350.00 or there about I am all ears.
I would save for a few months or whatever it takes and at least save up for a set of Bitubo shocks. Can be had for about $525. Or wait around for a pair of Ohlins, progressive 944's, or something better than the 412 to come up in the classifieds.
I run ohlins on my 2003 RKC. I picked up a pair of 944's as a backup for when they Ohlins were serviced. Got the progressives for $250 IIRC.
Best bet: save some more money and buy Bitubo's for $525 or Ohlins for around $700.
seen you post this a few times already so i have to ask if your shocks are that much better or really the best do you offer a satisfaction guarantee? if some one spends $900 for your shocks and are not happy do you buy them back?
i mean if they are really that good i dont see why any one would want to send them back
