The look of apes on Street Glides is growing on me and thinking of installing either 10" or 12" on my 2011 Street Glide. I'm debating between Harley mini apes or Yaffe Monkey Bars. I am trying to keep my hands at fairing height because I want to keep the fairing functional of protecting hands, etc.
I want to keep my fairing mirrors since my fairing is painted and I do not care for the look of chips or covers in its place.
I read a bunch of posts going years back, but trying to get opinions between the two different brands.
Either installing them myself or dealer? I have ABS so don't how big of a pain in the *** it will be.

The decision on getting apes or mini bars if not to difficult. The questions you asked has been asked many times, but here's the thing if you go with 10" you will difinately have to take the fairing mirrors off and plug holes or just leave them, because your arms are going to be in the way to use the mirrors, then get mirrors to go on the controls. The 12" your hand will be maybe about even or just above the fairing but not too high maybe knuckle eye. If you have any friends that has apes or mini bars sit on their bike and see how it works out. I have 12" and I love them, got to keep my fairing mirrors because I really didn't like the mirrors that goes on the controls sticking above the fairing like a wind sock, because to me that's defeating the purpose of have the slick look of apes. you're going to get a lot of go with these go with that, but like I said if you know anyone that has some sit on bike and even ask to take it out and see how they work for you.
You'll need a longer clutch cable (ABS makes no difference because you won't need to change the fluid lines). As for the mirrors, I reversed mine and installed them upside down. Work just fine and didn't have to replace them. I installed the Khrome Werks 10" (actually closer to 11") and love them. But it wasn't really for looks. I've had hand surgery twice and they take alot of the stress and angle off my wrist.
I have 10" yaffes on my tk. They almost went in the trash they were such a bitch to wire. I did try to return them but the store wouldnt take them back greased. I had such a bad time wiring them i still cant stand to look at them and as soon as i get the spare time theyre gone.

This statement is only partially true and will only pertain to 10" bars. You can go with 10" bars and not change anything but some will opt for a longer clutch cable. Anything over 10" bars on the PreRushmore models will require changing both clutch and brake lines. 10" bars will cover up your fairing mirrors as stated earlier and depending on your height you may have the same issue with 12's.
I'm am 6 foot 4. Trying to stay at fairing level. I'll check out the 12s. I don't care for the mirrors on the bars look with the bars over the fairing.
You're not going to be able to do everything you want. If you keep your hands behind the fairing, they will be blocking the mirrors. I went with the 12" Yaffe bars and they are perfect for me. I'm 5'11" 32" inseam. They but my hands just above the fairing, but it still cuts a lot of the wind. I do need gloves in the winter though. I can look under my arms and use my fairing mirrors. I use them more for monitoring other bikes on a group ride, or a preliminary check for a lane change. I always turn my head and actually look before moving. The Yaffe bars have been my favorite mod I've done to any bike. The hand position and height are ideal.
Wiring them isn't that complicated either if you're comfortable disassembling electrical connectors. Drop some chain through, lace the wires through it, soap them up and push/pull them through.
I've got the 12" Harley mini's on mine and they are extremely comfortable to me. I have the mirrors on the controls and inverted so they don't stick up 10 inches over the fairing.
Krome Werks 10" bars. Changed the clutch cable for a +4. TBW (electronics)/brake lines are stock. If you go with anything taller, will need new brake lines, electronics extensions and of course the clutch line. Reversed the mirrors and hung underneath. No issues even riding two up.
