Default Trip Switch keeps resetting

So I have a 2005 Electra Glide Standard Anniversary Edition. Lets start with that. The trip switch didn't work when I bought the bike. Pulled the fairing and discovered that it had basically disintegrated and all that was left was the 2 wires and the back part of the cover. No problem. I'm an electrician so an easy replacement. Got the part from JP Cycles and wired it in. However, now it acts like I'm always holding the switch in. On start up, the Fault codes automatically appear. When I do get it over to the odometer, it I can switch it over to trip and then it resets it to 0.0. I looked at the wire diagram and all it shows is that 1 wire goes to Trip and the other wire goes to Trip Reset. Both wires are black and there are no distinguishing marks on the switch to identify what wire goes where. So, before I tear everything apart again, a quick question. Is it possible I wired the switch backwards or is it possible the new switch is bad? It's not a problem to replace it all and I have another switch if I need to replace it, but I just want to know if anyone else has had this issue and if so what was your resolution before I start tearing it all apart again.

It's always possible to get a bad new part.

Since both wires are black, indistinguishable and unlabeled I'd go in and switch them. It's easy enough to pull the outer faring...

Some guys use that same switch (mounted in a different location), to operate a garage door opener remote transmitter. This leads me to believe it's a momentary/normally open switch. Shouldn't matter if the wires are reversed. Test for continuity to determine if switch is bad. If switch is good, the speedometer itself may be bad, or the wires leading to it.

Yea, that's what I'm really hoping to avoid. Hopefully it's just a bad switch. Luckily JP Cycles sells them 3 at a time so I have 2 more if needs be.

That's what I was thinking. Going to give that a try this weekend and see what happens before I crimp them back together.

Perhaps someone here knows if PROPER FUNCTION is that the switch is momentary on or momentary off when the button is pushed. Your description sounds as if the button always pushed. I suspect the switch has reverse logic to what it is supposed to have.
