108 westbound from Sonora CA to Oakdale CA. I am came up on the accident just moments after it had happened.. Onehelper was already with the biker - I am a Firefighter EMT (34+ years) By the time I stopped, one other person was there also -the bikerhad me + Coast Guard EMT and a Hospital EMT so he was good hands. What happeded was - he was on a Fatboy With a sissybar - he had bungied a sweatshirt to the passanger seat area and most likley a sleeve came loose and got into his back tire - that shirt was really wrapped around his brake caliper area - Yep, his back tire locked up and from what the car behind stated - he was going into a "lowside" when at the very end for what ever reason the bike did a highside?? why with the back tire still lock Tight. He was very lucky today... ended up with good smack on his forhead and mostly a broken nose and busted lip + banged up R-elbow and road rash on arms and back.
I know a lot of people like the little half helmets and Not wearing good leather when its warm.. From what I saw and my years of Exp on the fire dept and the past 12 years riding - had he had a good full face and good leathers he would havegotten away withouta scratch -
My thanks to the Tuolumne CHP's This is the first time in all my years that I had a CHP come up with gloves ON and offer to take over C-Spine (holding) This Rider was lucky today -Also My Thanks to the unkown Coast Guard EMT and the Hospital EMT - They both did a very good job doing a primary and secondary survey of the biker. We did not know each other at all - I held C-spine and the two guys both worked together great - they covered all bases - As the Fire/Medics arrived we passed on our info and by the time I finshed talking to the CHP both the other guys were gone. Nice to see people stop and get involved -
My only reason for passing on this story - if you are going to tie items on your passanger seat area - Make Damn sure they can not get loose - locking that tire at Speed has to be a scary ride.... He could have very easly gone into oncoming trafficor the side of the moutain orunder theguy behind him
Lucky rider.
Question, how good a road is the 108? Planning on going up end of july from tehachapi to bridge port, camp at pinecrest. then head to the coarsegold indian casinoon the 49 before heading home.
We have a home in Soulsbyville which is right off 108 between Sonora and Twainheart. We've ridden up 108 all the way to Sonora Pass. It's a great rode. Nice sweeping turns....good shape. You'll love Pinecrest...beautiful area.
