I have been reading in the forums and many folks still prefer the 5 gears to the 6.
not sure really why because I too prefer a 6.
most of the posts i've read in relation to 5 gear vs 6 usually have something along the lines of 'i can't use 6th gear unless i'm going 65mph or over...' i'm not sure what happened, but it seemed like in 07, when they introduced the 6th gear, people just lost their heads. they would bitch about not being able to use 6th gear at 40 mph. whereas, previously, with the 5 speed, they wouldn't even think of using 5th at that speed. then they complain about how 'useless' it is. just use the gear appropriate for the speed that you're at, and you won't have any problem.
If your intention is for 2 up touring, then any year Ultra Classic is going to beat any Street Glide any day for all day riding comfort. Especially for the most important person, your passenger. The seat is more comfortable and the armrests for the passenger will keep her happy. Don't quote me but the ultra should have 13" shocks compared to 12" on the street glide. Again better ride. The transmission maybe a 5 speed but remember, it's geared to be a 5 speed. The ratio's in 1-5 are completely different than a 6 speed. Biggest problem will be trying to put it in a 6th gear that isn't there. Been there, done that.
Do your due diligence on inspecting the bike and if your happy with the Ultra, get it. It will give you more storage space for her luggage and be more comfortable for her. As we all know, if she's not happy, you wont be either. You know you are going to spend money on either one so get the one that is already set up for long distance touring. The Ultra. It will cost you less making it your own and you can always sell it again later and upgrade to a newer year model.
I put 148,000 on Mt 89 Ultra Classic ElectraGlide. About 70k pulling a camper trailer. The 88ci have more power than the 80ci did. No issue two up dragging a 350 trailer.
just use the gear appropriate for the speed that you're at, and you won't have any problem.
Thanks. I have not ridden a 88ci with 5 speed before.
Maybe a softail with 5 speed is different from a bagger with 5 spd.
Will see how it goes.

.maybe consider buying the 04 and riding it for a year, then trade up to a better new frame if needed, if not you have great bargain
Hi guys
That is some high mileage you got there. (at least to me ... haha)
Did you change out the oil pump? Anything else to take note of?
This is something I wanna ask all these while ... say if this UC has high mileage.
If the motor is toasted or about to be toasted, would I be hearing some weird noises or engaging gears or at least something strange during the test ride?
Hi guys
Just to follow up with regards to this thread, I cant thank you guy enough for the invaluable advice and comments to my dilemma.
in the end, the bike was taken by someone else and I was the 40th person in the queue on the viewing day.
i guess probably I will continue to save for a 103ci until another good offer comes by.
