Default Polished Forks

Too cold to ride, so I polished the forks on my '99 Ultra over the weekend. I started by removing the front wheel and fender. Next, I used three different grades of sand paper, ending a wet sand with a 3000 grit foam pad. I polished the forks using Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish and a buffing wheel in a high speed drill. I repeated the wet sand/polish several times before I was satisfied. In order to prevent oxidation and water spots, I applied a coat of wax. The end result looks like chrome.

Looks good. Keep and eye on it, wax won't last and is not a good protectant for base metal.
if you are interested in serious protection, look at a wheel/rim coating. Many different manufactures of this type of coating

Here's a pic before the forks were polished. I used Rejex sealant to protect the shine and prevent oxidation. This stuff is gold. One application lasts an entire season.

I did the same thing to the forks on my '06 Electra Glide and I ran them bare and polished for 4 years or so. Water got in under the original clear coat and it looked like crap. Sanding and polishing was a significant improvement and cost next to nothing but time. Oxidation was not a problem on the bare aluminum. A quick buff with aluminum polish once a year was all it took to keep them looking good.
