Sorry to hear about the bike and your leg. [:@] We recently took a four day trip to western N.C. Rode the Blue Ridge, Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, an some other unknown roads, with a stop at Cherokee Casino. Had a great time an learned to pack lite.
The clothes we had on I figured were good for two days. So one extra pair of clothes.
We didn't take leathers, but took lightweight jackets which came in very handy.
You can always buy anything on the road that you may need.
Frogg Toggs are great raingear, very lightweight an can be rolled up into a small roll. Also they are very cheap.
All clothes went in saddlebags, maps and other crap went into tourpack.
Averaged 45 mpg
950 mile trip

I had to get the wife to help me get it off the kickstand a couple of times as well.
I may be asking something that doesn't need asking but have you tried turning the bars fully to the right before trying to set the motorcycle up off the sidestand? I don't have the tour pack so I've never experienced some of what you guys are talking about. But I have taken a few trips with my wife so I understand what you're talking about when it comes to how easy it is to over-pack. My wife is getting better about it.

Bryan, sorry to hear you dropped the bike, broke a leg, and pissed off the b/h in the process. Bikes can be fixed, broken legs heal, but a p/o'ed wife--that's a toughy--I'd plead testosterone poisoning induced temporary insanity--sortof the male equivalent of PMS.

When I ride long distances, I take a couple of Tylenol/Advil before getting on the bike in the morning along with a liter of water--get the anti-inflammatory drug in the body before the aches and pains start--an Airborne buddy said that's what they do--take the meds ahead of the aches and pains.

Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for some great info. Hope you will getting better soon.

I will be doing the first trip up the California Coast with the wife in September.

Bob, Relative to the your tank bag. I have been toying with that idea to store small incidentals as you mentioned. What unit are you using and does is work OK with the Harley tank profile. I on a 2007 SG.

Always keep two on the ground.

Seems like I read on the Forum somewhere something about a DVD called Ride Like a Pro. Sounds like you may need to get it.
Bryan already rides like a pro. If I'm not mistaken about where he said he dropped the bike, it was in a gravel parking lot on an incline while stopped or near so. Could have happened to anyone, and it is not the first bike that got dropped in that parking lot.

Bryan,

Sorry to hear about the leg damage. The way you kept limping on the whole trip had me wondering if it was more than just a bruise. Take care of yourself.

By the way, one of your tips really hit home. I'll let you figure out which one, or you can PM me.

Bill

Bryan, considered a sidecar? Sorry, just kidding. Glad it was a LOW speed drop! Seriously, I'm with ChooChoo, wear leathers no matter what. Scabs are hell when healing, worse than broken bones, don't ask me why I know. My alternative was to trade-in the OL for a furrin' model to save some weight. Best move I ever made!

John,
My tank bag is a Nelson-Rigg bag that attaches to the tank with 4 magnets, so it works fine with the HD tank.. It has a non-marring surface on the bottom so it won't scratch your tank, but you need to keep it clean.
