Default Limp Mode

I have a 09 ultra and went for a ride today. All was good then all of a sudden no throttle. The bike went into limp mode. I shut it down and restarted it up, it ran for about a mile and the same thing. Limp mode, so I limped home. Now how do I get the codes to see what the problem is ? What do you guys think it could be ?

Usually cleaning the pins behind the throttle bottle might correct the issue. I believe it's called "fretting"

Throttle by electrical wire if it has that. That is limp mode 101. It has multiple checks and balances.

My 09 Classic used to do that. Shut it down, wait 10 seconds, fire it back up, and might do it again in 2 miles or might not do it again for 2 weeks. Turned out to be corrosion at the end of a wiring harness. Harness replaced, and no issue after that. Never did it again. I was lucky it never happened in the passing lane, or when passing somebody on a 55 mph 2 lane.

Check the wires at the end of the plug that goes into the left side of the throttle body, well known issue thst a wire will break inside the insulation within a few inches of the plug. The codes will help narrow it down. Mine ended up being the throttle position sensors. They're not serviceable according to harley but luckily I saved my old throttle body when I upgraded and just pulled those 6 metal clips off and that piece houses the throttle position sensors.

Thanks for the replies , I will start with the plug at the throttle body.

My 14 Limited did it several times. One dealer put a new ECM in it and it did it again soon after. Local dealer checked everything and put a new induction module on and no problems in over a year.

My 2009 Ultra did the same thing last summer. Cleaned the connector and it acted normal for a few months then did it again. The code (I don't remember what it was) pointed to the throttle position sensor. Initially, I didn't see a break in the wire and thought it must be the throttle body (the position sensor is not a separate part). I called my local independent shop and was informed they RARELY see a TB problem... it's normally the wire harness or connector.

So, I went back to look at the wires in the connector. I removed all the connector's pins and inspected all the wires individually. I noticed one wire had a weird looking kink in it. When I grabbed the wire's insulation on each side of the kink and pulled... it stretched... the wire inside was broken. I cut it back and soldered in an extension... with heatshrink. Problem solved.

Seems the common culprit for most folks turns out to be the last/shortest wire in the harness. Apparently, making the tight turn to plug into the TB is the wire that breaks.

Ride Safely!
John.

Long story short, on my '09 it was a broken wire. Bottom wire on the "throttle body" connector. Soldered in a new section, problem solved, multiple codes cleared.

My 2009 did this and it was the twist grip sensor.
