Default 09-16 TC flywheel/crank issues

Hey everyone, I have been curious the past few days about anyone having crank issues within these years on their bike or bikes. I've scoured the internet and several other Harley forum related sites and see that most people stop talking about these flywheel/crank issues around 2012'ish. Also, curious for the new M8's as well. A lot of people doing motor builds and I don't see many addressing the flywheel/crank. I'm sure runout is/was measured in these builds, I hope. Just want some 2019 info on this, thanks for your input.

I was at my dealer one day and the service manager asked how many miles were on my 14 FLHTK. I told him, and he said you will be back for a new crank around 65,000. I said what? And he explained that HD does have a problem with some of the crankshafts. I asked what the fix was, and he said we replace the crankshaft with a Darkhorse Crankworks crankshaft. I said cool, see at 65,000 miles. Oh, and they cover it under my ESP.

Not in the year range you listed but my 07 spun the crank on the po. It was replaced by one that was welded and trued under esp. The invoice was a bit over $5k.

The crank / rod bearings went bad on my 2009 FLHTCU @ 65,000. Crank was replaced with SE Flywheel Kit '06 (# 23729-07A) @ $729.95. The complete bill was $3300 covered by ESP. The same bike had the right side crank bearing walk & spin in the case @ 99,000. ESP covered another $3300 in repair including cases & a crank. Now the good news is that my 2014 FLHTK has only had a rocker box gasket replaced so far and it's @ 114,000.

Thanks for the info guys, would still like some more replies. Like I said, seems that this issue hasn't been as prevalent as it once was. I've been wanting to do a build on my 09 RKC, and have been researching the past few days, its been snowy and its gonna be very cold this week. My garage is not heated so I'm hoping to tear down and check out the gearbox and crankshaft pinion runout next week. I've been talking about doing a 107 build, however that being said, if the crank pinion runout is bad, gonna go with a new S&S flywheel, and that just about kills my budget this year at $2000. If I do the new flywheel, I'm gonna go bigger and I'll have to save more money.

Once again thanks for the replies.

Ride safe!!

My 2008 spun a wrist pin bushing at 10,000 miles. Then at 50,000 miles it had a crank pin and bearing go bad. Both times, I had the crank fixed by Darkhorse.

When I upgraded my 110" motor to the 117" Pro Race Big Bore Kit, I sent my Crank to Dark Horse to get some love.

In addition, upgraded every new part inside the motor and added a SE Timkem Bearing. It made a big difference performance wise.

I've read good things about Dark Horse, however, there is an S&S video that debunks the welding of the crank pin press. Does it work, yes, but in the long run, I think that is just putting a band aid on it when it needs stitches, my opinion. If you spend $1000 to have that work done, might as well spend $500 more and have a brand new flywheel with no worries, wouldn't you think?

Talk to one or two of our sponsors, like Hillside Cycle, they build some serious engines and also tuning kits, so will have a good idea of reliability of stock cranks.
