Default Steering head grease

Service manual says to use "Special Purpose Grease Part No. 99857-97". Is it critical that THIS grease be used or can I use some other flavor that's already in my grease gun? It's a multi purpose lithium grease... Yes or No?

Thanks
Dale

You want something that's not going to break down on hot days and drip all over the place.....Red n Tacky has worked for me....

Yeah, that. I used to work in a frame and fork shop and we'd see a lot of bikes with the steering head races rusted, especially the lower. We'd pack the new bearings with this grease that's made for boat trailer wheel bearings, 'cause its formulated to resist water.

That’s what’s in my gun right now. Do I need to worry about mixing that with the factory grease that’s already in there?

Hey there ol'buddy! Long time no see (well, since Nomadmax and I met you for breakfast the day before you headed south 😎. Hope all is going well and that you're getting settled in.

Good question on that grease. I'm guessing it will be ok especially if it is applied as recommended: pump it in until it starts to exit top and bottom of the steering head....

...and then wipe, wipe, and wipe the grease off some more. Ride then wipe the grease off, park it and wipe the grease off, when you walk by it stop and wipe the grease off, repeat...
