Default 88 to 95 2003 RKC

I stopped into my local dealer today and was looking at the cost and benefits of going up to a 95 ci. The SE kit comes with 203 cams, gaskets, breather, bores piston etc and I was quoted with labour at the dealer, approximately $2000 Canadian give or take. I don't have time to do it and I have no issue getting them to. However since I just installed S&S 510 chain cams and new stock tensioners and a good breather and exhaust in the last year or so, it was suggested to just go with bores and flat top pistons. I was told I can save a lot by doing that and the price dropped to between 12 and 15 hundred. Im considering it. The bike runs rather strong anyway. Has a power commander 5 with auto-tuner as well as true duals and SE Street cannons. I know more than a few of you guys have made this jump. Was it really worth it? Will there be a wow factor or just hey this feels stronger? What do you guys think? It is a touring bike and I can hang with the 103 rather nicely for the most part anyway.

Since you have the 510's, I don't think you are going to get a lot of bang for the buck for 7 extra inches.

The only way I am tearing into my engine at this point is a catastrophic failure, and even then I would consider bolting in a S&S replacement engine

Oh, and before anyone else says it, there are FAR better parts out there than the stuff HD uses in their kits.

My 95” Fatboy was a great runner. Street Port the heads and bump it up 7”.

The increased cubes and compression will transfer to some nice gains.

My 103 turned into an S&S T111 when the crank started to sissor. Shouldn’t have any future problems and boy does it pull

Take a step backwards for a moment and find out what will most suit your 510 cams - you may be able to find that info on the S&S website, or simply contact them for advice. If say they work best with a particular CR then you know the way ahead! They offer a 97" kit for around 1k dollars - jus' sayin'......

I am curious about the "power commander 5 with auto-tuner". Will your bike auto tune? I thought you needed oxygen sensors for that, and I don't think an '03 had those. Perhaps also a later ECM capable of reading oxygen sensors too. Did you or someone retrofit it? Or it won't Autotune? Or am I just wrong? Thanks. Good luck with your build if you decide to do that.

You will be paying good money to redo some of the things you just did.... and I'm not sure the seat-of-the-pants improvement would be worth $2K....

I put that SE 95" kit in my '03 Heritage, about 5 months after I bought it new. Going from OEM to that big bore kit was a big change... but when I dealt with the tensioners by adding an '07+ cam plate a couple years ago, I switched to Andrews 26 conversion cams and feel an upgrade over the SE203 cams.... I think the cams are the biggest felt change... I've read good things about the 510 cams, seems a shame to dump them so soon....

Since you already have the cams, as already suggested, I'd do some research with S&S about what would compliment their 510 cams in an 88" engine.... You will probably find a solution/suggestion that will allow you to leave the cam chest intact, saving you money & labor...

Good luck with your mods.....

GoffySB, I installed Vance and Hines true duals that came with O2 sensor bungs in the headers. The autoturner came with the O2s and its coupled with the PC5, yes it works and rather nicely I might add.

I did a S&S 97 inch big bore kit with ported SE heads on my 06 Heritage a couple of years ago I kept the 510 G cams and it runs great. Dunked at 99 hp and 102 lb torque. Somewhere down the road, I’m going to install 583 easy start cams and that should wake it up even moer. I say do it and keep the 510s and maybe down the road install different ams.

Thanks Randy, I have late model head pipes with bungs, but they are plugged. I also have the PC5. So maybe an Autotuner with included sensors would be all I need. Perhaps a call to Fuel-Moto or Dyna Jet is in order.

Thanks,
Goofy
