I have a 2007 electra glide UC 96ci. It takes 2 to 3 tries to start when hot. Also sometimes when I drive it 3 miles to the gas station. It will finally start after a long crank, idle rough, some black carbon smoke. It will idle up to 1500rpms then settle down. Sometimes it will idle low when I clutch and stop and the check eng light will come on for 30 seconds. It will idle up to 1500 and the light goes out. Everything I read says eng temp sensor. Agree? Where is it? On the top of the front cylinder? The bike is under warranty but the techs can't duplicate the symptoms. Figured I would change the damn thing myself. BTW it has 32K miles. Could be spark plugs ond/or fuel filter but I doubt it.
Hello is your throttle by cable, or by wire? If it’s cable there’s a sensor right in the throttle body itself that carbons up every once in a while. Clean that and see what happens. I have an 09 Street Glide, and my throttle is by wire. I don’t have that sensor. It may not be a sensor, but I do know when they carbon up, the engine acts just as you mentioned. Not sure if I’m any help. Hope you find your problem.

Keep in mind the engine temp sensor also sends a signal to the cold idle circuit/mode, thus the rich running (black smoke), Todays techs have they hands tied by the mother ship's rules and quit possibly the dealership, and are afraid to old school troubleshoot.
I had my 09 Street to Harley Davidson, and they couldn’t find what the problem is with mine either. I replaced the engine Temperature sensor on my engine, it helped a little. But went right back to acting up. The next sensor I’m replacing is the sensor right in the throttle body. They call it a MAP sensor. My symptoms are this. It always starts right up cold or hot. When it’s cold the engine runs around 1300 RPM’s. As soon as the idle calms down, it hits and misses on and off. Not quite as bad as the parade mode and idles rough at 900 RPM’s. As soon as I touch the throttle it’s gone! It could be wiring, but I think it’s something else.
Not sure what the difference is in wire or cable. If yours is by wire and don't have the temp sensor I would assume mine is by cable. Either way I'm letting the dealer figure it out since I still have 18 months on the warranty. If its always in the shop in a year I will trade.
