Default 1st Service Question

Okay. I was all set to do the 1000 mile service this weekend (bikes at 1200 miles). Bought my oil, filter... ordered a lift from J&S online. Thought I would be good after reading all the feedback and posts regarding their fast shipping. Turns out they are on vacation this week and my lift will not ship until the 15th.

I used to do the service on my sportster while it was on the jiffy stand. I should be alright doing this on the 07 RK right? Also is it a good idea to have a set of all related gaskets on hand? Never had a problem with the sporty but it was older and I was not worried about a waranty.

Alift is not required for a regular service. In fact, I think it's easier to access the drain plugs (all three of them) without a framelift. The dealers and indys normally use a drive-on liftfor most of their service work. Also, the only gasket you might need is for the clutch inspection cover, if you are changing the primary fluid.

Actually, the gasket that is under the derby cover can be reused. No problem there. You don't have a chain inspection cover, so no worry there. You will need to o rings for the drain for the trans and the engine fluids. And also one for the primary drain screw. The two for the engine and trany are the same ones (black), and the one for the primary is the little brown one (smaller than the other two). Make sure that the ones you use are not already cracked, as that will cause a leak. Also, some (including myself) use a small amount of thread tape, or liquid thread sealer on the drain plugs. Up to you, but I had a leak on my primary drain and had to drain the whole thing again, add new fluid, o ring, and then applied thread tape. So, IMO, just go ahead and some first off.

You don't NEED a jack, nice to have but doable without. You will need 17369-06 which is a gasket service kit that includes 1 large derby cover o-ring and three 11105 small o-rings for the tranny, oil and primary plugs. You will need a 63798-99A (assuming you want chrome) oil filter. 4 quarts of oil (is would use Amsoil synthetic myself). 1 quart of tranny fluid (again I would use Amsoil 75/90) and 1 quart of primary fluid (I would use HD Formula +) Get a service manual as it is worth it's weight in gold. Make sure you check critical fastners for toque and do a clutch adjustment as this is a time to ckeck and make sure all is well, and the clutch cable may have stretched since new.
