they don't 'have' to, but you tell them what mileage to pre-set it at when you order it so that it reads correctly. i know that the newer (not sure what years here) bikes also store the mileage in the ecm, so i don't know if you have to have them agree or not. i do know that we had the wife's mileage set a little ahead of where she was when we ordered it and then she rode for a little bit until it hit that mileage, then we switched.
