Default Inner primary bearing

What are the symptoms of a bad IPB? I've had an intermittent noise at shut down for a while. Replaced the cam chain tensioners and thought that took care of it, but the noise came back.
This weekend I took it for a ride and got about 2 miles from the house and it was making a whirring and clanking noise. I thought it may be the compensator and took the primary cover off. Compensator was tight but when I started the bike with the primary cover off it sounded like there was a clanking coming from the clutch area.

Anyone have an IPB go bad? Info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just replaced mine last week. Have a look in the engine tech section of the forum. Pull the clutch in drop it in gear. If its ipb the noise will stop

Just a thought but I had a sportster one time that the primary chain was to tight and would make that noise. Loosened it up slightly and it was fine.

Transmission in neutral, clutch lever released, noise is heard --> mainshaft is spinning
Transmission in neutral, pull in clutch lever and hold, noise is still present --> mainshaft is still spinning due to stiction caused by the fluid in the primary
Drop transmission into first gear with clutch lever pulled in and held, noise stops --> mainshaft is not spinning

If it's rattling at shut-down, it's more than likely the compensator is worn.

A bad inner primary bearing sounds like marbles being rolled around in a coffee can.

Thanks for your input. That is one of the things I wanted to know. Doesn't really sound like what I heard. I'm going to put the cover back on and get it warmed up again and try the IPB test just to eliminate it though.

Found the culprit, It turned out to be a bad lifter roller. I'm not sure why it made that noise at shutdown, but I'm pretty sure the roller caused it.

I appreciate all the help I got from this forum.
