Stupid P0562 code
Just venting here. 2013 RKC with a little over 8k on it. About 3-4 weeks ago I got a check engine light/battery light with a P0562 code. I researched the site and all threads related to P0562 and majority say it's the voltage regulator. I did a few of the charging checks from the sticky but I'll be honest, my HD mechanical skills are not as strong as I'd like. As I've never had good luck with motorcycle batteries, my current one was at 2 years, I went for the path of least resistance and ordered a Big Crank battery. Installed battery last Tuesday, ran fine, even did a 200+ mile ride with 5 stops in 93 degree heat, 110 heat index over 5 hours and bike ran like a champ. Bike has not been on the tender since the new battery as I was riding it every day so I didn't see the need.
Anywho, I'm riding home for lunch, a mere 3 miles and the check engine light/battery light goes on again with another P0562 code. I grumble and relent that I'll need to get it diagnosed. When I purchased the bike in 2017 I bought a 4 year ESP from Discount ESP knowing my limited mechanical skills. I pull my warranty card and it says my policy expired 6/9/2019. I pull my contract and it says 2021. So I call Discount ESP and they confirm my policy is good through 2021 but they ask me to wait for them to verify First Extended has it correct in their system. They said they'd expedite the verification but it will delay me getting my bike scheduled for service. I venture they'll get it confirmed this week but still a bummer.
Biggest sadness is the weather is gorgeous for the next 5 days, mid 80s with 90s this weekend. Prime riding weather and I can't ride. I'm sure if I throw the bike on the tender I'll get by but I'm afraid it'll just keep draining my battery and ruin a new battery. I hope I can get it fixed by next weekend.
Thanks for listening.

What a load of BS. You have a valid contract showing the expiry date. I'd think that'd be good enough. Several days (and that time frame is expedited?) to verify something that shouldn't need to be done in the first place, and should only take a few minutes in the second place- Hope they actually get around to fixing your bike this year. Hopefully they'll "expedite" that too- so they'll at least get you back on the road by Thanksgiving.

also had this code couple years back... both lights on but not every day... noticed alot when i used heated grips...dealer put on scanner and said all fine... i mentioned VR but they would not replace because it was showing good at that time...finally when i fired bike up one morning and volts were at 12 instaed of 14 i rapped on the regulator with hammer and volts quickly went to 14... problem confirmed... oem VR plug and play.. fine ever since... sometimes these electronic VR fail slowly and even tho usually they allow overcharging when they do it can be undercharging on occasions... like mine... and probably yours
I got my policy confirmed and dropped the bike of yesterday. They'll look at it on Tuesday. It does make me a little bummed that a bought a new battery when it may not have been the battery all along. I did debate taking it in before ordering a new battery but I rolled the dice. I did test with the skills I had. I charged that battery and used a multimeter, read 12.73 at 100%, dropped to 11.10 on ignition and on throttle up, voltage never exceeded 14.31 so based on the charging sticky, my battery was good and my VR was good which only leaves the stator and I do not have the skillset to test that. I'm curious to know what they find.
P0562 means the battery voltage is low. It could be the voltage regulator or it could mean a failed stator or less likely, the rotor. Don't take anyone's word for it and do yourself a favor, pickup a simple multimeter from a discount auto place or home depot. It's a simple test to ensure everything is working. Place the tester dial **** on DC Volts, it's should look like a capitol V with a broken straight line of dashes along the top of the V. Touch the negative and positive terminal on the battery while it's running and your reading should be close to 14 DC Volts. If it's less than the battery voltage was with the ignition off then you have a charging issue somewhere. We can dive further if you need to but please verify your repair is completely correctly first.

Looks good. Not that's yours is questionable because the Reg/Rec was just replaced but sometimes the Reg/Rec will work intermittently so keep that in mind if you have problems again down the road. Sometimes, the Reg/Rec will fail when they reach operating temperatures. So if your getting battery charging problems you'll want to test the entire charging system, 1) leads from the Reg/Rec back to the battery 2) Stator output 3) Stator continuity. Those are the basics. Glad you're up and running again.
