Can't you just make a fused connection to the battery? Orr use the charging pigtail at the battery?

No, it is not the norm on Harley Davidsons.

A few models had this feature, it is not common.

Get out your wiring diagrams and look at some Harley electrical systems.

Just because it may have been common on your Japanese bikes does not mean it was done on Harleys.
