Default 08 EG gas gauge issue

hey all!

i been having a problem with my gas gauge it seems to have a mind of its own lately, as im riding the gauge go's to full and i get the gas light then a few minutes later it go's back to normal?

i swapped tanks a while ago thought maybe something was loose to i looked every thing inside looks good so what can be causing this?

its an 2008 Electra Glide

I had a similar problem on my 13 Limited, Have you had the faring off lately? On mine the plug behind the gauge was loose. Probably from my radio install a few months before,.I pushed the plug back on and it's worked perfect ever since, Of course I found it after tearing the tank apart first and testing the sending unit.

I hope yours is that simple.

My 02 EG gas gauge went south three years new. Checked the sending unit, then narrowed it down to the gauge itself. HundredDollars plus, problem fixed.
The needle would dance all over from F to E, start at full then drop to half etc.

thanks for the input!

I have been in the fairing a few times for audio and fixing the fairing mounts, I did check the gauge connection a few weeks ago forgot to mention that didn't see any corrosion or bad wires

the gauge just shoots to full and stays there never shows empty when this happens, the fuel light illuminates and the reserve display shows dashes. it really don't seam to matter how much fuel is in the tank when this occurs? when it does happen ive tried tapping on the tank no change, stopping and tilt the bike from side to side to see if that does any thing no change

something is loosing signal or maybe resetting? it has not latest more then a few miles at a time, in a 20 mile ride it might happen a few times or not at all

Definitely a short some where in the signal wires or the sending unit in the tank. The gauge measures resistance in the circuit sent by the fuel level sender. When the fuel gauge loses signal, it goes to full.

Have you pulled the level sender and put an ohm meter on it? All kinds of videos on youtube on how to test it. You might have a dead spot in it or a short in the connections there.

Again, good luck chasing it down.

At least you have the trip meter to know how many miles you've gone and about how many more you can go on a full tank. It's very irritating though when you look at the gauge and it reads full and you know it's not. Like a pilot that has conflicting instrument readings. You know which one to really depend on, or do you??

i pretty much do go by the trip meter but it nice to have to fuel light as a reminder in case i forget to look

i guess ill be pulling the sending unit out an testing it and look over all the wires see what i come up with this time?
