I just installed xm and cb in my 16 rgs. I dont have my whim installed yet so have no mic, but I have the cb audio set to the bike speakers. When I key the cb on my other bike I get loud static from the rgs, but no sound. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue is? When I key the rgs I get the same sound on my sg. I cant talk as I have no mic yet. Could the module be bad? Thanks.
Sounds like you may not have both CBs on the same channel? What did you do about the CB antenna? What is the antenna VSWR?
I've seen bad CB modules that were purchased at a discount over the internet; even with good antenna, acceptable VSWR & verified same channels selected, the pos would not work (reception seemed "off frequency" on all channels).
Before declaring it doa, make sure VSWR is good & same channels are set on both CBs.
Same channels. I’ve tried several different channels and nothing. I used the J&M hidden antenna. The fm antenna is also hidden so tried to keep the clean look. I don’t know what vswr is. How do I check it? I did purchase the cb module via the auction site so it may be faulty. I shouldn’t need a mic connected to receive right? If the module is off frequency it shouldn’t pick up when I key the other bike should it? The hidden antenna is grounded to the engine guard bolt as recommended by J&M. Thanks
rmc's point regarding moving the bikes apart is valid; when too close, there can be front-end overload.
VSWR is voltage standing wave ratio. It's a measurement of how well the antenna system is resonant to the radio's frequency (CB's channels are each a different frequency).
The J&M hidden antenna will never give satisfactory performance.
The radio purchase sounds like it may be used/take-off equipment? Any guarantee from the purchase source? The friend that bought the CB module off the internet (for use in a 16 TriGlide) that was bad ended up buying a new replacement from the H-D dealership. Buy twice, cry twice.. Lesson learned for him.
Instead of using a hardwire mic, you're going with WHIM & BT headset? Good luck.
When I did the quick disconnect for my tour pack I tried separate hidden antennas for both the AM/FM and a J&M hidden antenna for my CB module. The hidden AM/FM antenna works great. The CB, no exaggeration, communicating was more effective yelling to the other person. Range was seriously just a few feet, but... it did technically transmit and receive lol I admittedly am not the CB guru some on here are, but I could not get it to work any better so I went with the relocate kit mount for when the tourpak is off or use the factory tourpak mount when it is on, with the standard length or factory antenna and have pretty decent range, or at least acceptable range to me with that setup (1 to 1-1/2 mile). No WHIM though.
Not meant to bash any company, maybe it was something I did or did not do... just sharing what worked best in my situation.

Sounds like you've learned from experience. And, although you think you're not a CB guru, I would suggest you got it right. 1-1/2 mile range is very reasonable for bike to bike. Can it be optimized beyond your stated performance? Yes, but will it make a difference; probably not (both bikes will need equally good systems or else the distance will be limited by the least efficient (antenna) system. Well Done!
I rolled the rg out into the driveway, but it made no difference. I know my 09 ultra and 09 sg could use cb sitting right next to each other with headsets. I don’t think squelch would matter, but tried lowering and raising on both bikes. No change. I know reviews are mixed on the hidden cb antenna, but thought I would try it. The rg is picking up the signal, but it sounds like feedback noise. I think Since I am not using a headset I need to separate the bikes further. I will try when the weather improves and report back. I was going to use a wired headset on the rg like all my previous bikes, but decided to give wireless a try. I bought a dual Harley 20k evo s headset pack, but have not even opened it yet. Still thinking about just going wired. I still have to get a whim and harness and have my dealer flash the bike and switch the programming for the cruise and cb button swap. At least my dealer doesn’t charge for that. Thanks for the ideas guys.
Alright, I moved the rgs about 30-40 yards away from my sg and still the same thing happens. I messaged the eBay seller and he says he will refund or exchange if he has another unit available. That was good to hear, but I want to make certain this unit is bad before I return it. Could the hidden antenna just not be picking up the signal? Other than installing a fixed antenna kit how could I rule out the antenna as the problem? Thanks.
