Hello Everyone,
Do you need or should you get compression releases if installing the SE 255 camin a 96"? I have read and been told yes and been told no from many including mixed answers from various MOCO service Departments.
I do have the SE compensator and was told by a tech that the compensator is the real issue and in a 96" it would be no issue with the SE compensator?
There have been a lot of people that have run them without compression releases. I ran Andrews 48's in mine for a couple of seasons without releases. The main issue with the 255's were hot starts. The 96 is a pretty low compression set up stock.
If your worried about it that much why not consider an S&S EZ-Start cam?
Assuming you change nothing but the cam your nominal C/R is 9.3 :1 the actual is 9.02:1 ( Big Boyz Compression Calculator)
I.M.O. releases would not be required.
IF you are increasing compression and removing the heads anyway it might be smart and economical to have them installed while it`s apart.
Not removing the heads, Owners manual says it has 9.2:1 compression is that what you meant?
I would be interested in how that big boys calc works and what I need to know to use it.
at what CCP do you start to need compression releases?

Excellent choice and a bit of tuning results in some good numbers

Your cam choice changes it to 9.3 static or nominal
Google the calculator and just fill in the blanks e-z p-z ( even I can do it)
Note the actual working compression shown at bottom of chart
I think I have narrowed it down to the 48H or the 255.
The ez-start thing just seems lseems other part time worry about breaking. Especially since I tend to keep my bikes a long time. My last bike I had for 12 years.
A friend has the 255s in his 2010 street glide with a vance and hines pro pipe, heavy breather and a good dyno tune and that bike runs really good for a stock 96 incher. He has k7ck back once in a while on a hot start but nothing unbearable.
