Default Kick Stand

I have a 2017 SGS. the kick stand is terrible in it. it moves so much when its extended, does not seem like it goes far enough forward. Any recommendations on a good aftermarket stand? bike is stock height.

TIA

Is this your first Harley? "They all do that" to some degree, no way to tell if yours is excessive. Many coming from other makes, myself included, almost had heart failure the first few times the bike was parked on the jiffy stand. There is a locking tab on the top of the stand pivot which engages in a slot when the stand is fully down and weight is put on the stand. The tab is held in position by bolt and unless that bolt comes loose, the bike will not fall, the stand will not retract until the weight is lifted from the stand and the tab disengages. The tab has a square indentation centered on the bolt hole and the stand has a square boss on top that goes into the square on the tab. As long as the bolt is tight, the tab can't rotate on top of the stand pivot. Check to see if the bolt is tight, then don't worry any more. If it still seems excessive, have someone else with Harley experience look at it.

Agree with btsom
That kickstand locking method has been in service since 1936

Just be sure and pull it back a little when you get off it, it will lock. Heard some guys have dismounted without checking the jiffy good..

I agree with btsom. I sometimes I have no choice but to park my King on a slight downslope, with the front facing down. The bike will move forward a bit and the jiffy stand locks in place. Look at the video at about the 1:00 mark to illustrate the jiffy stand.

I understand your concern. Just a few days ago I rode to my dealer to have my stand checked out.

The service guy took a look and explained exactly what others here are saying. The bike will move quite a bit if parked forward on a down slope until the stand can't move any more. THIS IS NORMAL, but also, some what un-nerving. In this situation (on my own driveway) I now physically watch to make sure the square part engages in the slot before releasing the brake and let it gently move forward. I will often leave it in first gear, shutting the motor off, before setting the stand.

Why not let it roll forward until it takes up all the lash in the drive train before putting the weight down on the stand?

That is a patented design that has worked well for many many years. I would not trust an aftermarket. NO other stand locks into place like the Jiffy Stand.

Always make sure kickstand is pushed all the way “forward” before dismounting. With the stock jiffy stand properly installed & maintained the bike will know whether to move or not.
