Hi

can somebody tell me the function of this hole in the cylinder head

I believe it's a threaded hole for the engine temperature sensor.

That's a hole for temp sensor, from the condition of the metal around the hole looks like nothing was ever installed. You can either install a plug or leave be. And yes I did read it is on a carbed engine. Maybe HD cast all the heads like that or a head got replaced.

AFAIK all TC heads have that hole. Plug it. IIRC it's 1/2 NF.

That hole looks like it already has a plug in it. I have never had the valve covers off so just a wild guess, might it be where the hole was drilled for the rocker arm pivot or something similar?

That's exactly what it is. On a carbed bike it came with a bolt in it. Part number 4175.
