Of course, my application was a simple carb bike, so not the power requirements of EFI, security, et c. I do think the AGM technology is a vast improvement over the conventional lead/acid. I have not used a Li battery myself b/c of the upfront expense, and I think you need a Li-specific charger. I am interested what others who have them say about performance and longevity of those batteries in a moto.
I like using the Duracell brand from Batteries Plus. When traveling, there is usually a Batteries Plus store anywhere you go and they will do a warranty replacement if ever needed. (I haven't had a battery die on me on the road yet knock on wood). Buy it online and go to the store to pick up and it's cheaper than going to the store directly. They take the old one as well. I saw the new lithium battery at the dealership. It is very light in weight and powerful. The problem with Lithium batteries is they give out with no warning. They last twice as long if not longer but I don't like surprises especially when traveling.
Replaced the original battery in my 2009 FLHTCU after 7 years for peace of mind ... Used a Big Crank from Battery Mart ... No core .. $100.00 delivered ... So far so good !
There are good battery companies out there like Yuasa, but I have trouble with them because their terminals require these little adapter blocks, and you can't mount connections on top and the sides at the same time. The adapter blocks are just another place for connection resistance and they loosen easily. For this reason, I stay with the Harley battery. It's a decent battery and it connects up better than the others.
I have never gotten a Harley Battery to give me more than 3 years of service and that's using a battery tender every time it's parked in the carport. As a matter of fact, my wife's battery went out on her today luckily we had stopped to eat and there were people there who gave her a jump. The battery, Harley, is only two and a half years old. I'm ordering her a Big Crank from BatteryMart and while I'm at it I'm ordering one for my Limited. Today's batteries just don't last like they use to.
Curious if there is a learning procedure required when replacing battery on 16 Road Glide. Most new cars require a ‘learn’ procedure due to the charging system requirements. Yeah,if U own a newer car, domestic or import, you can’t just change out a bad battery anymore. The charging system needs to recalibrate. So back to the H-D, anyone confirm or deny if a learning procedure is required? Changed out mine and find the volt gauge fluctuating between 14 & 14.5v while cruising. At idle, it remains steady at 14v.
Thoughts are welcome.
