Default Ultima Wheel/Pulley Bolts

Just bought an Ultima Fat Spoke rear wheel for my ‘04 Electra Glide. When I measure the depth of the bolt holes for the pulley, they are the same depth as stock. I have run a tap through the holes to clean everything out. However, when I try to install the bolts, the bolts will go in easily until there is about 1/4 inch left of the bolt sticking out. Then it gets very hard to tighten the bolt. Weird thing is, when I run a tap through the holes, the tap will go in the proper depth. I’ve measured how deep the tap goes and the actual NEW, OEM pulley bolts will not go in as far as the tap.

Anyone else had this issue? Anyone have some insight on what might be going on?

Hopefully that all made sense!

Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

This might be a stupid question, but are the bolts threaded all the way to the top?

Are you using a bottoming tap or a chaser tap? If you are using a cutting tap the last bottom threads are not getting cleaned. Use air to blow out any particles or liquid to prevent hydro lock

Makes sense. I feel kind of dumb now. Haha! I will try a bottoming tap and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions!

So, tried using a bottoming tap. Got a little better but still starts getting hard to turn when there’s about 1/4 inch left of the bolt showing.

I thought about just getting shorter bolts but it’s hard to find good bolts that have a long enough shoulder and I’m sure just adding another washer onto the stock bolt is probably not a good idea.

Yes. Tried running the old bolts through just to see if that was affecting anything but it was the same result. 🤷‍♂️
