Default 2008 classic Starter ring gear replacement +

What had happen was....
symptoms started a few months ago with a intermittent grinding noise when I would start the bike. Tested the battery and found a bad cell. With battery replaced it seemed to cure the issue....until it didnt.ha
Next for me was to check the starter gear. Having a what the attitude about it, i replaced the gears with all ***** set up. Rebuild went good but when i pulled the starter out i revealed the real issue. The starter ring gear is missing teeth.

so here we go. Today i get to order parts. While i am in there i will also swap out the chain tensioner. Any recommendations? Will keep this updated as i go along.
Here are the parts i am looking at. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks all!

You still have the stock comepnsator? I have a 2008 Ultra’s and went through almost same issue you are dealing with except for starter gear missing teeth.. i ended up replacing my compensator ( stock ones are junk imo)with a Baker Comp and chain tensioner with a Baker Attitude chain tensioner and alls ***** starter clutch ( bike runs so much better now ). I have an extra Baker Attitude Chain adjuster that has 500 miles on it that i bought out of my buddies bike after he totaled it . If you are interested in a Baker Attitude adjuster i am looking to get rid of it for $80 and i pay shipping ( they cost over $200 ) i would rather someone get some use out of it than just sitting around in my garage collecting dust...if interested let me but anyways looks like you on on the right path on getting your bike all back together..by the way im betting the automatic chain tensioner than came in our bikes is what caused all these problems to begin with

Have you considered replacing just the ring gear?

So you have replaced battery and starter clutch and now you discover missing teeth on ring gear..... No brainer to replace ring gear . As you mentioned , may as well replace clutch hub instead of just ring gear, as it can be a bit tricky …Your are also replacing primary chain tensioner, also a no brainer... Depending on mileage and wear you could save money there, your call …

Now the compensator,,,, Yes they have been / could be the weak link in the primary, (especially on your model),,,,, Depending on miles , say 50k , I would replace ,, again you call ….Your model will require a new rotor to accept the new updated compensator …

Other things you could spend money on depending on mileage are ,,,, new clutch plates etc ,,,, again you call …. Also if you don't replace the compensator , you could install the plastic oil sling that is glued to inner primary cover , (that comes with the new compensator)… May be of some benefit even with the older style compensator …. Good luck ….

EVO Industries has just the gear that can be attached to the basket for about $155.

All parts are in and getting into it today. Is there a way to remove clutch basket and chain without removing the compensator?

You must remove the compensator and clutch at the same time.

Make sure you put a critical eyeball on the compensator components.
