Agree with the others...tread separation. You need to replace that. I got 17K out of mine, but without the separation.

Tyre looks fine to me, except that it's a Dunlop! I don't see any wear pattern to worry about - I've seen worst on my own bikes over the years! I suggest checking your pressures again, before your next ride, then if possible travelling by a different route, simply to avoid the road surfaces you last rode on. If you get a similar squirrelly sensation then change to a different model of tyre or brand. Most of the major tyre manufacturers make suitable tyres, so there is no shortage of choice! My own preference, having ridden new Harleys for over 40 years, is Avon - got them on all three of my V-twins.

Dunlop was quick to respond, and here's what they had to say....... (I redacted his phone number)

I would take that tire into the dealer. They may warranty and replace it.

I just replaced my OEM tires at 17k with Michelin Commander III. Highly recommended!

I cannot comprehend 14K on a rear tire. I maintain tire pressure religiously and top out at 8k, I get 15k or so on a front tire.

you have a 2005. those tires are vastly different than the new-ish (2010) dual compound tires. on the older tires, i would replace at 10k on the rear, 20k on the front. with these, i replace them both at the same time, and last dunlops i replaced were at 24k.

Thanks, I was going to add that maybe it had something to do with me having an older bike. I run American Elite's and they too are a dual compound tire. I would also imagine a new rear for the newer bikes is a bit more expensive than my "skinny" 05 rear tire...

I'm just going to get the C-III's and not worry about any possible warranty. With 14k miles, there won't be much if any warranty available.

Glad you like the C-III's, my mind was made up a while ago that they were next.

Hi all,
My original Dunlop went 15k before it cupped out badly. Michelin II did the same thing on a couple tires. Now trying Avon Cobra Chromes, 10k on them and so far so good.
YMMV.....goldie
I'd replace that tire before I went too far

Default Tire ?

14,000 miles you did great. I threw the stock Dunlops out at 9k and change.. Looking at the photos they look cupped. I would buy a new set, you did better in milage than most..
