Ok, I know its a bit off topic, but I also know that there are lot of folks on this forum that are very "Oil Knowledgable"
So, a couple of months ago I changed the oil in my daughter's car as I do every 3K to 4K miles. I use only full synthetic oil. It's a 95 Saturn.
Well she called me this morning as she does most Saturday mornings just to shot the bull with the old man, and in converstaion she mentioned that she had to put oil in her car the other day. I asked her what type she put in and she said "Dad, motor oil of course". I asked if it was synthetic and she said "what?"
Ok...To my question. I am pretty sure she put dino in it. Will it hurt anything until I can get it changed out? Wont be able to do that till next week some time. Any help or advise is appreciated
Thanks
Jim
Everything I've read says your not supposed to mix the two. I don't know how much she drives but I wouldn't think it would cause much damage if any, in that short period of time. Now if you did it on a consistant basis for lots of miles you would probably have big troubles. No expert here just my .02
Speaking as a professional mechanic dino and synthetic are 100% compatible, so you can mix the two as much as you want, as often as you want, and for as long as you want. Zero damage will occur.
You can easily verify this at any oil manufacturer's website, i.e. Valvoline, Mobil, Amsoil, Castrol, etc. as it is a common question and is always in their FAQ section.
Ahhh..not tryin to be a wise-*** here, but what do you think "Semi-Synthetic" is...it's a mix and plenty people run that...(ok, I admit..I was tryin to be a wise ***).
valvoline says it's ok to mix the two oils if needed.
Don't rush to change it though wait til next normal change.
You're wasting money changing full synthetic every 3-4k
It can easily do 10k.
Car may reccommend 3-4k. in that case todays dyno oil would be fine.
my 06 EG says 5k on dyno.
I normally run semi synthetic in bike change about 6 or 7k.
dyno about 3k.

the oil can go 10k your right, except the dirt that goes into the motor oil is not good to be run through the motor. Can I see a copy of your oil analysis report you recived to verify this? I have some from my bikes and my cars I ran synthetic in. Although the oil was still in good condition it was DIRTY.... which is why it needs to be changed. If you have never done an oil analysis I recommend gettin one done here http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
link to valvoline synthetic page.
Read the last note on mixing.
Yes I know the filter should be changed. But even with todays new filters
with better filtering media and with the synthetic oil I wouldn't be afraid to extend filter life that long also if needed, like on a trip or something.
Over the road trucks routinely do 10k plus on oil changes and diesel engines are harder on oil and filters because of the fuel. http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ...asp?product=19
