Default Impromptu 86 FLHT Make-Over

I am the PROUD owner of a 1986 FLHT. Here's a little history on my 86. Bought it in spring of2005 and did an initial change of fluids, still need to do forks. Had a great year riding. Last year I had an accident due to my rear tappet block screws loosening up and spewing pressurized oil all over my rear tire. Fortunately I was turning right very slowly due to config of intersection when bike slid down on side and then threw me over the other side onto the other lane. Minor injury to myself and bike. Major injury to my ego! Had i listened to my bike and shut her down and got a pick up to bring us home this could have been avoided 100%.

Checked on repairing back tappet block gasket. Local shop tried to rip me off! "Buddy. I don't have the hours book on that motor but I think we're looking at 5-7 hours." HD in Columbus,In quoted me 2-2 1/2 hours labor. Since in the past I had wrenched on my 76 Electra Glide and built a Triumph 650 basket case from scratch I bought a couple torque wrenches and began ordering parts. Since i didn't want to put in adjustable pushrods all I really needed was rocker box and tappet block gaskets and push rod tube seals. So how in the hell did I spend $ 2000 ?!?

Upgrades!! Chrome>> Rocker Boxes, Cam/Timing Cover, Tranny Cover, Clutch Arm Assembly,Primary Cover, Oil Pump Cover,
HD Head BoltCovers, Inspetion Covers(HD Bar and Shield with Flames)Lower Fender Accent Trim, Bolts, Washers, Smooth Allen Heads. Had touring seat reupholstered. Took the old timing cover off and thought, "Man, now's the time to put in a cam - Andrews EV-27 ( research done on www.nightrider.com). Already had picked up a set of Samson Silverbullet Turndown Mufflers after initially getting bike. To truly make it a Stage II motor I went ahead and ordered a S&S 'E' carb with chrome air cover. 40,000 volt coil and Accel wires. Amsoil 20-50for motor and primary and Amsoil 75-90for tranny. Painted the jugs and head solid black. That was the easy part. Had a 7-1-07 personal deadline and a hernia operation sched. for 7-10-07,AAAAGH!

7-21-07: Fired her up yesterday for the first time! Sweet!! Especially since all work was done by myself! Unfortunately my doc feels that riding is out of the question, see him on the 26th for after surgery check up and prognosis for tentative riding date. Until then I'm trying to be content with firing her up, listening for any problems and looking for any leaks, etc... None so far. Will probably need to fine tune carb and would like to fine tune ignition timing. Once i can physically get heroutof the garage I'll send in some pics. Like a proud Papa! Thanks for listening !! Thats an awesome story. Now do as the Doc says and get healed. Then get out and RIDE! I hope you enjoy your build as much as I still enjoy the 74 Sportster I built. It took me three years to complete, as I had other bikes to ride. The bike you build from a basket or do the most work to yourself will always be a part of you.

Daytona Twin Tec 1005 Ignition Module Kit

Just ordered the 1005 kit this morning from Eastern Performance Cycles (sponsor site) for $ 249, free shipping. Said it'll be in mail today. Gotta take my tank back off and set the motor at TDC in preparation. This kit is $ 320 on Daytona Twin Tec site>>> module, wiring, single fire coil set that'll fit on my stock mount. I'm all giddy. J&P wanted abot $275 + shipping for just the module only. Tried to talk me into the Crane Hi-4
for approx $319. Then another $200 for USB interface. Twin Tec interface goes for about $110. With current mods I doubt that I'll need that feature. Once I get it installed I,ll fine tune my E carb and should be good to go!!! Thx to all who responded and helped. Especially shooter64.
Updates on install and first impression will be forthcoming. Yahoo!!
For you guys with the newer bikes,Twin Cam w/EFI, you oughta check out their site. They have a programable system that monitors and adjusts itself and interfaces with computer for advance users.
