ok so this one got me stumped. 07 street glide keeps blowing running light fuse. eliminated the rear of the the bike wires unplugged and still blows. checked all wires behind fairing/both front blinker/running light removed checked wires everything good. next went to under tank wires...everything good there. As soon as I replace fuse and push start fuse blows. Remove fuse then I started bike, I put fuse in while bike is running the fuse don't blow. I ride it 30 ft fuse blows? I removed housing and brake lever from handlebar, Install new fuse shake the **** out of the wires fuse won't blow. Couple of times it would start with new fuse and not blow, now it back to blowing again...This one has me baffled...Any help would be greatly appreciated before i lose my mind.
Sounds like you will have to trace the wires for that circuit by hand and find where your break and or wires are rubbing the insulation off, electric work is and can be lengthy, start where they travel anywhere they have to bend and move, ie up at the steering. A wiring diagram helps, follow it.
There is a circuit board in the taillight assembly. I would start by isolating it first, then work your way to the front running/turn signal lights and isolating each one of those. Looking at the wiring diagram, it appears a wire from that circuit goes to the left hand control hi/lo beam switch, so there's that, too. Also, don't forget the rear fender tip light.
Do you have an VOM? (Volt Ohm Meter) Use that to isolate the short. (Use OHM setting) Have you done any recent work on bike? Changed Bar's, removed fender, messed around under seat, inside fairing? Etc.... or did this just start happening?
I kept blowing the fuse on my 08 Ultra. Dealer couldn’t find the issue. I finally found where the wire came out of the rear brake switch had a loop zip tied and hanging down. The wire rubbed against a bolt as I rode it and kept shorting out.
if you have the capability, tear apart a blown fuse, solder a common 1157 light bulb to the pins ( use extension wires) and then insert in fuse holder. The light will flash bright every time a short happens. Easiest way to troubleshoot.
Have you made any recent changes to your bike, such as new handlebars, or threading switch wiring through them? Any other mods or work done? Sometimes simple jobs can have an unexpected result!
