INNER FAIRING PAINT
Not trying to be a smartazz, but if you buy a service manual it will tell you exactly what is involved. Once the outer fairing is removed (7 screws total) you can see the backs of the guages and the wiring harnesses. You will have to remove the ignition switch also to get the fairing cap off. It is easy to do, but better explained in the manual than I can explain it.

Like a lot of other forum members, I changed my inner fairing (and swapped the stock gauges for spun aluminum)--did this a couple of months ago without difficulty following the instructions in the Service Manual--an indy wanted $250 for the swap. And no special tools required.
For painting the inner fairing, again like other forum members, I bought a second inner fairing and fairing cap to give to the painter (a quality auto painter who did a great job), and installed it rather than remove the ones on the bike and have the bike unavailable while they were painted.
For the net $$$ involved, it's the best mod I have done so far.

I took my own apart whenI had my bike in for paint, with the service manual it took me about 1 hour to completly take itapart and lable everything and put it in my truck.
Best time I ever spent

I took some digital photos of the routing of the wire harness and to document where everything was at before I started tearingt things apart. Printed them out when I put it back together, made things a lot easier... it's a fairly easy project.
