do you feel more heat with lowers? probably.
does that mean the engine is overheating? probably not.
we're getting ready to go into winter. with the lowers on, you're going to be much more comfortable. although i'm in Louisiana, i've worn my chaps 0 times over the last 3 winters because the lowers keep me much more comfortable.
i've noticed a little more felt heat in stop and go traffic in the summer, but not while moving. and like has been mentioned, the screens from the twin cooled lowers will allow more airflow. and they're cheap. about $30 for the both of them.
Do this. Take out blanks and get grills. Take out the storage boxes in lowers too for more airflow. Remove doors all together. Much more airflow. It's a little chilly on 45 degree mornings but your motor will thank you.
You know, I was about to call bullshit because HD sells M8 bikes with lowers from the factory, but then thought they are all twin cooled with radiators in the lowers. What is done, if anything, to the exhaust and do you have a tuner on it?
goes to high idle with the rear cylinder not firing on a 50 degree day after a decent stretch on an open road
Although that is an indication of the EITMS coming on, it's not an indication of actual overheating. Just means it's gotten hot.
It's going to be warmer with the lowers on but it should be fine.
I have an oil temperature gauge in my fairing and it reads 30 plus degrees warmer with my lowers installed vs removed. Personally, I like how I feel and that my engine runs cooler so I only have them on in the early spring and late fall.
I ride year-round and just put my lowers on a couple of weeks ago. I also did a couple of long trips this summer and had my lowers on for the trips to keep my legs dry in rain. My oil temp was at normal in the highway runs as compared when my lowers are off. My oil dipstick has an oil temp gauge.
