I have a 2004 Electra Glide Classic Standard. Have a short and need help finding it.
it started in October when we made about 300 mile round trip for a buddys dads funeral...it was raining, foggy...bad weather...got 2 miles from home and blew the ignition fuse.
After giving it time to dry out, I replaced the fuse...started it and it was fine. A week later I started it fine... drove down the street and on take off the ignition fuse blew. I replaced it, turned on the ignition, started the bike, and it blew again. I replaced the fuse again, turned the ignition on and the fuse blew instantly.
I have been looking all over and cannot seem to find a good reason for it. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Hi Mark, Welcome to the Forum from Utah.
Any chance you have a schematic for the bike?
The Ignition fuse sends 12V to the TSM or TSSM to let it know the ign is on and goes to the right hand controls to the Off/Run Switch. When the switch is on it powers the start switch, the System relay coil and gives the ecm a signal switch power is energized.
If you turn the Off/run switch to off and the fuse blows when you turn ign on you know the short is before the switch. Then I would try to isolate different parts of the circuit by opening connectors.
Well...after days of searching....I found the short. With the help of the schematics and a little knowledge...I realized it was only blowing the fuse when I turned the handlebars to the left... narrowed my search down to the main wiring harness coming into the fairing. At the top of that there was a white with black stripe wire that had been rubbing on a grounding post and finally had tore the insulation off thus leading to the short. I got it covered...and covered the rest of the exposed wires with rubber tape, then electrical and she's purring again with no probs.
thanks again!
