Default Windshield nuts

Anyone have a link to a picture on how to replace these 3 windshield inserts. I'm not gettin' it by reading about it. Do you have to pry the inner/outer fairings apart some after removing the windshield in order to get the nuts out of and then back in the inner fairing or do you have to take the whole thing off??

I took a bird hit and popped a screw and split the shield.

Thanx

Greg

No pic that I am aware of for installation purposes, but yes, you do need to remove the outer fairing to access the inserts. Maybe someone here has done the install and has taken pics.

Soos is dead on - you have to remove your outer fairing - which is like 7 bolts and then you have full access to those loose buggers. I just tried coating mine with epoxy and then pounding them back in place -I put the bolt back in to re-insert them and then removed it to allow the epoxy to set. Too early to see if it worked. I also understand that the MoCo has a screw-in version of those babies but I have not personally seen them. Good luck!

I have used the HD inserts.......very easy to install...take the outer fairing off...screw in the fairing screw a couple of turns, grab the screw with pliers and pull the old insert out then take new insert (install slotted end into the hole first) take said fairing screw and put a small nut or washers on so you don't bottom the screw before the new insert is in all the way and screw it in till its flush. Way better than the originals

I popped one of the brass inserts loose on my Ultra while tightening the screw after a windshield swap. Iremoved theother 2 screws holding the windshield and removed the windshield. I loosened the the screws that insert from the inner fairing side and separated the fairing enough to allow room to reinsert the brass insert. Iapplied a small amount of J-B Quick Weldto the insert andreinstalled it. I laid a shop rag over the inner fairing and used a pair of channel-lock pliersto press the insert all the way in. I let it set about 24 hours and reinstalled everything. That insert is now better/stronger than it was from the factory. Sorry, I didn't take any pics but it was really a pretty easy fix. Good L:uck!!!

I am planning on going to the dealer tomorrow to pick some up. Sounds like an easy install.

One of mine pulled out. I got a long screw andthreadedthe insert onto it. Then I heated the insert with a propane torch and inserted it back into the hole, held it for a minute while it cooled and removed the screw, all without taking off the outer batwing. It's held trough two windshield replacements (I tried a shorter windshield and had to put the orig. back on due to too much wind in my wife's face with the shorter one).

This came from Harleybuilder in which I wrote down just in case.

Part number is 16585-96. Once you get the press in nut out, use a 3/8x16 NC bottom/plug tap and tap the inner fairing hole, then just screw the replacement insert in with a wide blade flat blade screw driver.

The slotted end of the insert goes in first........you would think its the other way around but its not.
