Question The Franken-Dash

First post here, hoping you guys can help me out!

I recently purchased my first bike. Felt like if I'm going to sell Harleys at a dealership that I need to understand the lifestyle a bit more. Found a nice 1992 FLHTP for a nice price. The bike is in great condition, but not so great that I'd be scared to mess with it a bit. On my list is the dash. On these bikes, there's a dash that I'm sure was meant to be hidden by the Fairing that sometimes came on them. Mine has either had the Fairing removed or didn't come with one, I'm not sure which. The FLHS apparently came without the fairing and with this same dash, but I still can't find any swaps done.

My question is this: Does anyone know of anyone switching theirs out for something more appealing? I'd get specific, but I can't even find pictures or posts detailing these things or any time they've been switched. How hard is this switch to do? I'm no master mechanic, but I'm handy enough to do whatever.

Below is not my bike, but a picture of the "dash" in question.

That dash/nacelle COMBINATION was never used with any fairing to my knowledge

Im sure someone has converted one to Road King specs to improve on the rather questionable aesthetics

Wont be easy and it won’t be inexpensive

Might be a questionable expense on a 28 yr old police bike

I suggest you ride it as is

Your bike, your money, your call

EDIT: “First Bike” , the latest style is not a requirement to learn how to ride😃

I didn't know they were never used with a fairing! That's a neat little piece of history.

This bike is going to have some money put into it for sure. I like it and do not intend to trade it in. I'm making an Heirloom here.

My 1991 FLHTP has the same dash. I did not care for it at first, but got use to it. I chrome out the dash covers which help with the looks.

Depending on miles/ condition / service history there may be more pressing needs before diving into cosmetic issues.

Put some miles on it first to assess your mechanicals

”dash before flash”

”function above form”

” go before show”

etc

JMO / YMMV

Hey, now! I like that chromed out look! Where would you have happened to pick that up at?

I like the "breadbox" dashes!

That's one of the things that make those bikes appealing and different. Always wanted to get one and toss some big ol' beach bars on it and make it a cruiser.

While that pod was exclusive to the FLHS, the gauge package within it was used on the FLT through 1996 and the batwing fairing FLHT, FLHTC and FLHTCU through 1995.

If the bread box works perhaps concentration on something else like tires would be more reasonable while bike is new to you.
Would be a shame if you find out that some thing that costs $1,000 or more requires replacement.
If it looked anything like the picture i would leave it alone.
