oh and to clarify. my unit does power on fine in the fairing mount set up without mod. Thats confirmed. but when i use my handle bar mount i DO use it on battery only. It came with a power harness but instead of tapping in the power for a temp mount (i dont plan on using the bar mount long) I did not bother to try that set up so i can not confirm that it wont or will work. It looks like it will! its just a slice in a live in the fairing. If i was going to use it i might even just look into slicing that cable to a cig light plug and plug it in like it does int he car mount.

You might want to check the pricing of the Quest units. PCNation is listing the Quest for $341 and the Quest II for $524. If you end up spending another $50-100 on cradles and/or mounts, you're approaching the cost of a Zumo 450 ($511), which includes the RAM motorcycle mount in the package. With the Zumo, you're getting a unit designed specifically for the motorcycle.

I got my Ultra with the H-D Conquest setup. Screen is great, both day and night. I previously had the BMW navigator (Street Pilot III) on my K1200LT. Too big for the Harley. The Conquest is great, only downside is, you need to either put in the ear bud to hear turn, by turn or patch it into the AUX IN on the radio. When I use the AUX I lose my Sirius. The BMW pumped the audio pst the music into the right earcup when directions were given. wish the H-D did this....I'm working on it.

The best thing about Harleys, if it is part of the bike, even OEM add ons, there is a part number for it and it can be HAD. They list everything, just a little detective work on your part or the parts guy.

I have the Quest 2 and bought the mount from Harley and the craddle from Garmin(part you sit it in and brings power to unit) I then bought a cig lighter acc. from Harley for about 18 bucks threw away the cig portion and plug in the rest to the acc. under my seat and then plugged the unit in to that. Now have a switched unit I can turn on and off. TheHD mounting kit will fit the Garmin with no modification...it's the same unit with HD stamped on it so it stands to reason that it should fit.Sunlight is no problem even with sunglasses on.

I believe that the Conquest (Quest II) is also designed specificallt for motorcycle use.

I don't think specifically designed tho it does work well for it.

The first Garmin specifically for the motorcycle crowd is the Zumo. And since it comes with both a motorcycle mount and a car mount, and if you are getting near $700, you might as well get the Zumo which is a more capable unit than the Quest II. IMHO

the main thing is the CRADDLE! thats the piece that is included in the package deal but can be ordered seperate to help your non hd unit fit the slip in fairing mount setup.

I've had a HD Quest for 2 years with the HD fairing mount for the EG.While the GPS unit is very good, easily seen, and programmed. It is limited to only 115 mb of map storage, and so, won't hold the entire US like the Quest 2. The HD mount (cradle and hot shoe) are not so good. I'm on my third cradle ($100.00 each), and second hot shoe($60.00). Recently, I called Garmin to complain about the mounting system because it had given me so much trouble on our trip to Colorado. It kept losing power, and caused the whole unit to lock up. I had to open up the GPS in Winter Park and unplug the battery from the circuit board to get it to reboot. Then I had to put a shim in between the GPS unit and the cradle to resolve the power loss issues. Every time I take it on a long trip, I have a problemwith it. The customer service rep (I use that term loosely) at Garminsuggested that I should buy a Ram Mount for my unit. No, I am not kidding. Maybe the new handlebar mount is better, but the fairing mount sucks. I finally just used JB Weld to attach the cradle to the hot shoe. I already have holes in my inner fairing, so switching it out isn't as easy as never putting it there in the first place.
