Has anyone here sent their tins in to Harley to be painted under their color shop program. How was service and did you send direct or send through the dealer? Does Harley do these paint jobs themselves or do they contract it out? Advice would be appreciated, want to add some ghost flames to my tank and front fender.
Haven't ever dealt with harley custom paint (except for the radical paintset that was on my RK when I bought it), but if you are wanting ghost flames, call Darrin at 2 Wheel Tattoos in Britt, Ia. Darrin has done a lot of work for me and has a ton of talent. Their website was hacked and is down now, but you can reach Darrrin at 515-341-4141. Good luck.
The color shop is AWESOME. Check my sig pic, Custom Color Shop 2 tone blue pearl and black. Very Highly mettalic paint. BUT the downside is that I had my tins done in 2002 and I called harley to get some more paint because I was going to get a fairing and hard saddlebags. And they informed me that the paint was no longer available. Its basically a 1 time mix and its at the paint mixers discretion on how he mixes it. So They would not even be able to match my paint. I then went to a PPG color matching store and they photoed the paint to match it in their system. After everything was said and done, 2 quarts of paint would cost me over $850.00!!!!!!!!!! and that was just to get the base and color started, It was not even including the time it would take to tint and add extra metallic flake to the paint.
I'm dissapointed to find that info out but I decided to keep my bike the way it is and go old skool with it!!!
But the paint quality is UNREAL. My paint looks purpleish blue with a slight metalliclookunder normal lighting, Getting really dark blue in darker light but when the sun shines on the paint WOW, intense bright blue that looks like it belongs on a bass boat!! Very cool The paint has to be seen in person and in the right light to appreciate it.
For the $$$ and the downtime (you sending your stuff into HD and then them paining and shipping back to you) I'm sure you can find a local painter that would be less expensive and faster turnaround time. If YOU choose the colors locally you can also get touch up and extra paint in the future.
