Getting ready to take my brothers bike apart and install a new compensator bolt when going back together. Can i use my 9/16 -12 bottoming tap or do i need a thread chaser ? I can not find a 9/16 -12 thread chaser anywhere. Thanks !
I have always just brake cleaned and used a wire brush to clean the threads in the crank and has always worked fine.
I use a dedicated bottom tap to ensue threads are free of all loctite, so I know I get an accurate torque. I have seen engine failures from a loose wire that found its way to the oil pump, granted these were from wire wheels, but I wont use any type wire brush around the inside of my engines.
I have a bottom tap, but do not know if it would work. I would think a thread chasing tap would be what is needed. That's why i was asking . Has anyone used a bottom tap for cleaning the threads ?
