Default Blue stuff

Just fitting new compensator. The bolt that secures it has blue stuff on the bolt. Is this a locktite like stuff. On the instructions that came with kit it mentions red loctite on the nut but nothing about the bolt other than torques. This leads me to think that the blue stuff is locking compound or maybe a sealing compound?

Certain fastener mfgrs will use a heat activated thread lock. By heat activated I mean simply by the friction of installing it. Some are yellow, some are white, etc. If you really want to permanently lock it down you can add a drop of red loctite. But in most cases they know what they're doing.

Sorry but...

Anyhow, once you get it off, and you should heat it to soften the lock compound. Run a thread chaser to clean off the crap. Then add red loctite, and follow the FSm on how to properly torque it.

From loctite; Loctite Threadlocker Red 271 is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate that loctite is anaerobic. I was a bit more interested i what harley use on the bolt the so "called blue stuff". I wouldnt put that much loctite on a bolt. Just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of what it is.
Thanks

Yes in general loc-tite has different colors. Red is a indication of what they claim to be "permenant" and technically needs heated to break it free. Blue is the "removabale" type where you can break the bolt free with a bit of force but no heat required.

I believe, in mass produced fastening assembly, they use "patch lock" Basically a dryer form of loctite pre-applied to the bolts. The same end result as liquid loctite.

271 is one of several grades of loctite, follow the service manual instructions for the specific grade to use.

Yes it does seem a bit dryer and there is a fair amount of the stuff. Something that i found is that loctite has quite a short shelf life. @ 2 years from date of manufacture. So in most sheds maybe needs dumping after a year. It also needs to be kept within certain temps. Life was never meant to be simple!!!!..
