Those who need to brag about all the "power" their bikes have are lacking in other "areas" So what is the point of your post?

ORIGINAL: Tommy418

Its a shame that harley riders are so high on themselves. My dad rides a Big bad road king and won't take my little 600 kawi for a ride because he says he would kill himself. Why? Because my little, low performance 600 CC jap bike makes MORE power than his big 1450 with aftermarket pipes, etc, on a bike weighing just 400 pounds. "rice bikes" which run on premium by the way, not rice, are actually harder to control. what kind of power does a stock 88CI Hardley make? I remember HArley riders bragging that their modded FLHs broke 100 HP... my stock 600 makes 110 at the crank, and is more reliable. I have no problem with HD guys, and love to ride with my dad, and I always waive to them, even though they ignore me at best, and get down right mean at worst. Would I rather sepnd 18-20 G on a HD with foreign parts and an american name, or 7 on a jap bike with foreign parts and a foreign name? I know the jap bike will last longer, perform better, cost less to maintain, and be more fun, so as long as I am content to ride, and not worry so much about my image, I will stay jap. And I'll keep waiving at the HD guys, cause one day one of em will waive back because he or she is a rider, not an HD advertisment.

not at all embarrassed. I listed that because I thought maybe it would be monitored and denied if it wasnt an all mighty Hardley. You still haven't answered my questions. Why Are HD guys so stuck up? HDs are nice bikes, and some of them are near works of art, but why do the riders have such a high n mighty air about them? Is it because they know that no other bike maker can match them on inefficiency? Or bloated price? WHy does Harley keep making bigger and bigger engines when they could take the already monster 1200 or 1450 etc. and make it perform? a Kawi. 1400 makes close to 200 HP...why can't a harley, with American engineering? Its a shame that America is letting Japan and Italy and any other country blow them away. I was gonna buy a Buell because I wanted American, and I wanted performance, plus I LOVE the V-twins sound and torque, so I started researching, and found that all buells have is the American part and the Sound part...My 600 will beat a Buell 1200 all day long.
So why are HD riders so Cocky? My dad can't explain it either, though he does have the pro-Harley Mentality. Its a real shame. Kawasaki Is also beating HD at is own game...take a look at the vulcan 2000. Its a beauty, and it the most powerful Vtwin bike out. Too bad Kawi had to stoop to big, heavy low performing lumps of steel. If they could have kept their own engine making style, and had made a 2000 CC motor, it would make closer to 300 HP. I didn't intend to come on here and just say "HEY, HD SUCKS!!" I was hoping you guys could explain the reasoning behind your anti-everyone else Mentality.

First off... the idea that all Harley riders are stuck up is a gross stereotype. It isn't really fair of someone like you to come on here and ask a question because you are being unjustly stereotyped, and then stereotype all HD riders. Hypocrite I believe is the word. I don't know how to spell that in Japanese though... Either way... I wave to ALL riders. Moped, Yamaha, Honda, HD, whatever. All riders are friends to me unless they prove otherwise. I wonder what your riding style is like that people don't wave? Do you ride like an idiot? Not trying to be mean, just asking. But to answer some of your questions, Harley like it or not, is one of the few things remaining in this messed up world that is unique and American. It may not be ALL American, but is still symbolic of this country and our freedom. It reminds people of better times (I think anyway) and gives people an escape from their bills, nagging girlfriends, whatever... I personally don't want to go fast on a bike. I want something that is comfortable, smooth riding, obnoxious (personal choice), made of something other than plastic, and iconic. If you want something that goes super fast and is all about high performance, buy a crotch rocket. Most guys on here don't want that. Harley is like the Ferrari of bikes. It takes hard work to be able to afford one, and they still envoke a feeling that Honda, Yamaha, etc... can not match. I have owned Yamaha, and ridden several other brands. I can tell you that nothing is as satisfying as the clunk of putting a big old HOG into first gear and rolling on that throttle. Ok, I am off the soapbox. Don't be so disrespectful though. See if other's attitudes change. If I see you on the road, I will still wave!

I don't ride like a jackass, there is a time and aplace for that, and I have a Magnetic bag on my bike for storage(I.E. sticks to ferrous materials) I understand not needing to go fast all the time, thats why I got an outdated sport tourer, instead of a super sport or Race Ready(RR). Maybe I just live in a hell hole where all the sh!tty HD riders are, but its been m experience that every HD rider looks down his nose at non HD riders. But I digress, Im willing to concede that not all HD riders are asses, my dad rides one, and my gramps does too, and I respect the hell outta both of em. They do still have the harley beats all mentality. I think HD is more of the cadillac, Nice ride, status symbol, priced according to what it represents moreso than what you get. Ferrari would indicate performance and exotica. So I guess that a Vulcan would be like the Chevy tahoe, and the Harley would be like the Escalade.I realize that the Tahoe and escalade are both GM, but you get the idea of Value VS cost. 45G for a Tahoe that is equal to a 60-70G escalade. And if HD IS in fact the ferrari, the Jap bike are all like the Ford GTor Vette Z06....Ferrari killers on more of a budget.

Harley is like Ferrari if you think about it. And for a lot of the reasons you mention. Not the most fuel friendly, maybe not the most reliable, probably not the fastest, not the best handling, but they have a mystique that is unmatched by anything else. True, the Z06 (Jap bike) can blow most Ferraris away (of course not the Enzo, but anyway), but people for whatever reason see the Ferrari differently. It commands more respect (I think) even though the Vette is a great machine that is unrivaled in performance. Think of the Mustang or old Stingray. Not really fast, but still everyone loves them. And to rebuke your first statement... There is NEVER a time and a place to ride like a jackass. Too many people getting killed out there already. Don't be a statistic. Ride safe and you will live to see a Harleyrider wave to you. I am not the safety police, but one slip on a bike is not very forgiving vs. a car. I should know! I am sure half the guys on here can tell you the same thing... Be safe

I've had two of your precious Vulcans and they are good bikes. Other than the fact they like H-D have two cylinders that where the similarities end. The Harley is its own beast and until you ride one you'll never understand. Harley's have a soul. Think of it as riding a chrome plated tractor that can transport you thru time.

By time and a place I meant the track, I realize that you would never take an HD to the track, but jap bikes are capable on and off the streets. Different strokes for different folks. I think the main difference is the outlook. Practicality verse romantic image. I agree wholeheartedly that a Harley is a different machine, and that it is nice to be able to just cruise on by and see little kids get excited, but Harleys are too limited in capabilities. Even the HD sportbike(BUELL) is a great handling machine, and I loved the shakes when you start it up, it felt alive, but they are not as capable as they should be. What do you guys think about HD looking at watercooling? Will that ruin the time machine effect? I realize that a lot of people are sentimental over 50+ year old technology, I myself love the old Muscle cars(the big slow ones)
