Just a question on belt drives
My 2006 EGC is my first HD as well as my first belt drive and Im very impressed how smooth it runs, my question is what life should I expect out of the belt and sprockets ( if you can call them that ) I know it depends on riding style, loads etc just looking for a general average. Also when it does start to wear what are the symtons.
AN HD TECH AT STURGIS SD A FEW YEARS AGOSTATED TO ME 100,000 MILES MINIMUM FOR THE BELT . NEVER ASKED ABOUT THE PULLEY.. BUT THERE IS NOT MUCH TO WEAR THERE. THAT SAID MY BUDDIES 2001 CLASSIC BROKE THE BELT CLEAN IN HALF AT 33,000 MILES! IVE GOT
44,000 + ON MY 03 ULTRA.. LOOKS NEW...
OH YEA $1,600 JOB TO REPLACE THE BELT . OUCH ! PS: NO REASON FOUND OR GIVEN AS TO WHY IT BROKE.. HMMMMM
Belts should last at least 50,000 miles, but a lot depends on conditions. A lot of riding on roads with dirt, sand, etc. will cause the belt and sprockets to wear faster. A rock or other foreign object that damages the belt will shorten life.
In dirt/sand conditions you will notice that pieces of the coating that is on the sprockets starts to come off. It looks like chrome peeling. When this happens, it will shorten the life of the belt due to the rough surfaces on the sprockets.
