My experience with the SE tuner when I had an Stage 2 upgrade has not been well. I found it unable to provide me a tune that I eventually junked it in favor of the V&H FP3. The tune provided me by V&H, through their Customer Service hotline made my set-up achieve their peak hp and torque numbers. Incidentally, I had Rinehart 3.5 slip-ons as well as K&N air filter. However, my love for the performance and the rumbling sound of the Rinehart wasn’t completely shared by my wife. She found the latter to be excessive noise.
I had since traded my 2019 FLHCS for the 2021 FLHXS. So as not to alienate my wife ( I love having her ride with me), I am looking for a middle ground. I will limit my upgrade to Stage 1 with again Rinehart slip-ons and K&N hi-flow air filter. Due to my bad experience with the SE tuner, I am hesitant to buy another one for this purpose. Can I have a successful Stage 1 upgrade without a tuner? Or is it an must?

If you add just slip on mufflers, the conventional wisdom is “no tune necessary”. If you add a hi-flow air cleaner, then a new map (“tune”) is necessary. And that would be a “Stage 1”
Anything other than the SE tuner will have deleterious impact to your warranty. I did not wish to be constrained by EPA requirements that the SE tuner satisfies, and went with the Dynojet Powervision instead. I was still in warranty till this coming August.
I run 4.5 exhaust with stock header pipe with no catalytic converter and a KnN filter. No tune! got 3200 miles on it with no issues. I believe the ECM will adjust for a Stage One but not beyond.

I talked to a service tech at Red Rock HD here in Vegas and he said the black SE pro street tuner was designed to be used with hd parts only. If i get mine refurbished does that mean I can tune it using different pipes and a/c? I got an 11 RKC Thanks much for any info.
