Well, I got one of those "good news, bad news" calls from my HD dealer the afternoon I took my '05 FLHRCI in for the traditional 5000 mile maintenance. To my horror, he started with the bad news.......the claim was that the valves are passing excessive oil, causing poor performance, fouled plugs, excess oil consumption, etc. He went on to say that the engine would have to be dismantled, new parts ordered from the Motor Company (apparently they have a fix) and parts would have to be sent out for machining and refinishing! The good news.....they've had a lot of bikes come in with the same problem, have been successful at repair....and its all covered by warranty, except the $20 for "overnighting" the required parts!
Help! Has anyone had this issue? I was told it has nothing to do with operator error (?), is a known factory defect, and that HD is considering a recall on all '05 engines. This was yesterday, and I'm still in shock!
Look under "Engine Related" forum and there is a sticky for 05-06 Oil consumption. Which makes me wonder, did you have an oil consumption problem? Everything the dealer said was correct if you had the valve guide/seal problem but it seems you would have went in there complaining about oil usage.
Well it is a well known issue but my dealer told me he has only seen two bikes so far with the problem - I know that Phil from the forum had the issue and they fixed it up for him under warranty - I have an 05 and right at the 5K mark and I am not using oil and my plugs look great - My dealer also told me that they can't tell by VIN number what engines might be affected, they are just checking them as they come in - It will be interesting to see where this thread goes - Welcome to the forum by the way and please keep us posted as to how you make out -
I had the first oil change at 1000 miles (creeped to 1400 before I could get in). Switched over to synthetic at the HD recommendation. I have monitored consumption at least once per week after a decent ride. Until 3 weeks ago, I had full oil indicated. Then in just this amount of time, I've had to ad 2 quarts. Was told it was due to a long, hot parade ride taken during a recent Bikefest. Advised this to the dealer when I took the bike in yesterday for the 5000 mi maintenance. He agreed it was due to the hot parade ride. Hopefully I've caught this in time, with no cylinder or piston damage.
What I really need to know is if this is a known issue with any forum members?
I am on an 05 RKC. I am approaching 4200 miles and was wanting to perform my own service until reading your post. I have had approx. 2 quarts burn in 3200 miles. I have mentioned it at my dealer and was told that Harley's have always burnt oil and not to worry about it until it becomes excessive.
Needless to say, I will be having my 5000 mile service done at another dealer.
A lot of guys have used this as an opportunity to upgrade to bigbore with no extra labor costs....or added a different cam for minimal cost....this would be the time. If you have a good dealer he will work with you.
Bad news, no. That is great news as far as I'm concerned. I've talked, pleaded and screamed at my dealer about the same thing and always get the " thats normal yada yada BS". I checked the plugs yesterday and found the rear plug with oily build up and both plugs with oily threads. Yes mine does use oil, a quart every 1200 miles !! Its the smugness from the dealer that I would like to erase from his face. If I were not so Clostrofobic I would give it " HIM " a shot. Go for the 95 incher and get all you can. I'm going back to my dealer and try to remove his hemroids via his throat. This is A SORE SPOT WITH ME. Sorry...
Your dealer is full of $hit! My '05 RG has 15,000 fairly high speed miles on it and it has not used any, I repeat, ANY, oil between the factory recomended,(5000mi.), oil changes. It's almost disapoining as I would upgrade if to 1500 or 1690 if there was any reson to, but the bike has preformed flawlessly and I can't see messing it up.
I'll buy 1 quart in a thousand miles under certain circumstances, heat, traffic, but not EVERY thouand miles! Don't let them snow you, the bike is using too much oil.
Let me also point out that this is the latest of many Harleys that I have had and they DO NOT use oil!

I drove my '04 Wide Glide 5200 miles on a trip last year and it used 1/2 quart of oil for the entire trip. I don't know if I was just lucky or what but that was pretty impressive.
I have heard that some '05 and early '06 motors have a valve seal issue...I got a PM here a while back from a member and this fella mentioned that he needed new seals on his '06 Bagger. I think it was done at his 1K service. [:@]
