Regarding a carb and altitude changes.
Personal experience speaking now.
I rode a carbureted TC on two Hoka Hey Challenges which involved altitude changes from below sea level (Death Valley) to in excess of 11,000 feet (Loveland pass) and had zero issues.

hattitude,
I live between Idyllwild and the desert, if you wind up in Idyllwild summer or early fall let me know.
Not afraid of a carb just at nearly 70 not wanting something else to work on too much. My daily is a '75 C10 and it is carbureted just a bit of a hassle trying to find the right settings when traveling up/down.
BUT your information has me thinking differently about a carbed engine because of the internals. Don't think that I will be building a high Hp engine at 70 years young but one never knows.
thanks!

'02 & later Touring Twin Cams were "cruise ready" whether they had a carb or EFI....

There was a kit to add cruise to the '02-'06 it was #77198-04 for FLHRS/I and #77197-04 for FLHR/I.

There was a kit for the '07+ FLHRS/I #77198-07. I believe it was the same as the "-04" kit but with different cable connectors. I also read that the FLHRS had 3" longer cables than the FLHR, so that later kit could be used for both the FLHRS & FLHR..

I believe those kits are now an obsolete part.... so if you don't buy the used bike with cruise, it probably wouldn't be easy or cost effective to add it after the purchase...

Again thanks! just at my being older than when I had my Knucklehead in an early swingarm frame I would like the convience if possible. But then all I had was a thumb screw to lock the throttle so I could rest that hand.

my 03 has a 1/4 turn throttle lock added to the bottom of the throttle grip housing ... remove the OEM part and install new part.... really easy to use but I don't use it very much... just when I need my hand for something else ...

My 13 has factory cruise, I very rarely use it... again just if I need my right hand for something...

But now 20 years later thats moot really. The EVO is better yet so might as well go back a few years more if one wanted an outdated bike but with a great sound. That said, they're both too old to measure up to the newer models but not old enough to be desirable. I can only imagine how much money someone would pour into a 20 year old bike they wanted to use as their daily ride.

If the OP can swing an 09 RK do that, it'll end up costing the same in the long run but a superior bike to show for it.

I would give a bunch of money if I could get my '78 FXS back.... that is if it was in comparable condition. And I would LOVE to have a good knucklehead and/or Panhead...

But alas, my old bones love the comfort of my '16 bagger, and think my '01 FXSTS w/o any windshield and no cruise control, is really roughing it....!!!

The newer the bike, the better the technology. If you are looking at motorcycles that are over 20 years old, price is the factor. However, the motorcycle pricing is asymptotic meaning at that age, condition plays a bigger part than age. As for fuel injection, it is the only way to go. I don't care what I buy, I will never have a carb again, even in a push mower.
