Default Windscreen height

The windscreen on my '17 FLHTK is about 3" short of directing the air above my helmet. Right now it it creates a heck of a wind noise and helmet buffeting. One of the screens in the Harley catalog appears to have a "lip" that I assume gives the passing air a lift. I'm wondering if anyone has installed such windscreen and how much change did it make. I would rather keep the shorter look and have the effect of a taller one.

Thanks
Jes

Most people buy a windshield that they can see over. One that is about level with the bottom of their nose. Any added flip helps direct the wind over your head for sure.

The TOP of the windshield is supposed to be between the tip of your nose and upper lip. There are GOOD videos on this on U-Tube.

I bought 1 of those windshields that are curved on top (curved forward a little....I forgot the cutesy name of that type) and found it to be a colossal failure. I am guessing the guy who sold it to me got the height wrong. The air was supposed to go UP and OVER my helmet while the top of the windshield was lower than normal I think he said.

Bottom line, get the height right and there will be no buffeting. The wind will go right over the top of ur helmet.

I measured according to the site instructions at ClearView Shields. They call that lip a "recurve" and it helps a lot! Doesn't have to have a lot of curve either. ClearView is also Lexan/polycarb, so it is shatter-proof. I wound up with a 1 inch increase in height, and the coverage is perfect for me. I also opted for the GT Wide, which adds about 1.5" on either side in width.

If you're getting helmet buffeting, look at fangs. Ride your bike....when you start to get your buffeting, take your left arm and hold horizontal across your chest and see if that stops or changes the buffeting. If it does, the air flow is coming below your fairing. The fangs will help redirect the air flow away from the bottom of the fairing, thus stopping the buffeting. I have done that on my last to Street Glides. Don't care for the looks, but they do their job. For me it's comfort over looks.

Check out the LRS products. I currently have the 9" Ultra (dark tint) on my SGS and the wind goes over the top of my head, and I look over it not through it. Looks like they are on sale for $59 too - https://www.longrideshields.com/prod...windshieldsale

I use Freedom Shields on all of my rides....they offer their shields in 1' increments so you can really "fine-tune" the wind blocking. They also have a very liberal "return policy" if you don't remove the protective covering when you "test-ride" them. Call them to discuss and they also offer a discount to Forum members if you ask.

On my Ultra Limited I ride their 10" Wide Turning shield. I see no distortion from the curve.

you may find some of the air is forced over the top of the "crash bar" mounted lower fairings and up into your face.

My 2003 bike has no helmet buffeting, my 2013 does and I have tried recurved shields, different height stock shields, deflectors mounted to the fairing, etc.... everything short of removing the lowers and the 2 speakers that are mounted in them.

I had the same problem with the stock HD wind screen and bought a 10" Long Range Shield re-curved light tint for $75 and it now shoots over my head with no buffeting.
