Has anyone used Kuryakyn's Saddle Shields for H-D Touring Models? Do you like them?

They certainly do not dress the ride up like the RJS Originals

Is this an 07 or 08?
If it's a 07 first thing get a proper tune on it and get rid of that crossover pipe. The cross over can be done awaywith a Fullsac true dual conversion or tru dual pipes. I highley recomend the Thundermax for the tune.

08? buy some asbestos paints

Ok, so I did announce that I am a newbie and in an earlier post that I do not have any real technical knowlege regarding motorcycles. Would you or anyone else mind explaining this crossover thing I keep reading about? Please.

I am pretty much a newbie here as well, and when I first asked a few questions with my concerns over my 07 Road King you would have thought that I had bombed the HD factory by some of the responses I received. You seem to have some good members responding to you. I bought a Road King Classic in July of this year and have close to 4000 miles on it as of this time. I can feel the heat especially when I get in stop and go traffic, but my wife seems to suffer worse then me. She is short so I have the rear floor boards on the highest setting. On our last ride of about 360 miles she was wearing running shoes with socks and jeans. When we got home she showed me her ankles which were red. I accused her of having short socks on and getting sun burn, but she assured me that wasn't the case. The redness went away after an hour or so. I hear that when I change out my pipes and air box and install a fuel management system that the header pipe temps will lower by as much as 50 degrees. I haven't suffered, but will look for some kind of heat deflector for my wife. I love my bike and have had nothing but good times on it. I know you will enjoy yours as well. I live in the South, andduring the day our weather hasn't been less then 103 in almost 2 weeks with some days being as high as 106. I ride my bike every day and will not let the heat be an issue. Also the loud 5th gear the people complain about. You get used to it. I did recently get a recall download of the ECM which did make the bike run a lot smoother. You enjoy your bike and don't worry about it. Have a great week and ride safe!
P S I will get my wife a pair of boots real soon!

I think my stock 04 Road King gets a tad warm on the thighs at the red lights in the summer time, but I don't care for the things they sell to prevent some of it. I can live with it. Just give it a try as it is and then decide. Fall and Winterare coming so the heat will be a good thing.
Somewhere I read that the heat shields were a pain in the neck to install on one side of the bike. I've not done it, so I really can't say.

Thanks Two Wheeler. You are right, I do have good members responding. People are helpful and welcoming.
Good luck to your wife. Boots and a shield definitely sound in order.

I experienced such heat off the header on my VRSCA that I sewed pot holders on the inside leg of my riding pants.
I'm looking forward to not having to do that on the RKC. If it takes a shield on the bike instead of me, I'll be ok with that.

Would you or anyone else mind explaining this crossover thing I keep reading about? Please.
It's the exhaust pipe running from the rear cylinder down to the pipe on the right side of the bike. It's not really a crossover in the usual sense of the term. If you interconnect the two pipes on a dual exhaust system you can smooth out the torque curve and bump it up a little at the lower end. On the touring line of bikes it's really more of a hybrid between a dual exhaust with crossover and a 2-into-1 exhaust with sort of an extra pipe for the rear on the left. The bulk (or at least a higher percentage) of the rear flow goes out to the right, as indicated by the presence of the rear O2 sensor on the "crossover" instead of the leftward-directing pipe, which really branches off the side of the "crossover".

This "crossover" is very near the passenger's right leg.

Just in case you want to ask at some point, you'll not be able to use the left muffler with a conversion to a true dual exhaust. The left and right mufflers are two entirely different designs and while the right will (obviously) function as a "regular" muffler, the left, which might in its own "right" work as a "regular" muffler, is not comparable. You'd need two comparable mufflers for a conversion to a dual exhaust system. All this is to say that simply fetching a Fulsac conversion kit will not suffice. I forget just now if it's already come up but it (the Fulsac) will be suggested as a method of removing the heat from the "crossover" area.

I hope you love your new RKC as much as I do mine.

Two Wheeler: you just got your bike in July but had a "recall ECM download" on it? When was it born?

Thanks for the explaination and good wishes glens.

So, if a true crossover exists the volume flowing through the sides is evened out and the heat on the right is reduced?

Will a HD dealer service department perform such a modification?
Are there other components to this modification other than new exhaust hardware?
