I can understand that, if you are trying doing it by yourself. I had my wife help me. She got 3 different measurements with me siting on the bike with out me making any adjustments. That really didn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. I stopped by the local independent motorcycle shop where I purchased the shocks to have them measure it. I also had the owners wife sit on the bike with me to simulate my wife on the bike in order find out how many turns of the coils I needed to make for my wife..

If you measure to the ground you will be including a squished tyre as well. Probably doesn't matter but in subsequent tests you would have to make sure the tyre pressure is exactly what it was the first time.
