I have made a connector to go into my headset plug on the dash to make carplay work without a headset for my 2020 RG. I have a buddy who has a '17 Ultra Limited he had the dealer put a new radio in. My question is would they have installed the new wiring harness with the WHIM plug when they put that radio in? if so i can make him a connector to make carplay work.
When you say your buddy got a new radio installed I assume you mean a GTS. Installing that radio is independent of if he had a WHIM installed but if he did you would not be able to use the plug hack. If he's still using the wired headset connector on the tank then you would be able to use that plug.

Sorry, it is the GTS and he doesn’t use a headset, wireless or not. What I am wondering is does a new wiring harness have to be installed with the radio to give the owner an option of plugging a WHIM into the connector? If so the hack should work cause the WHIM connector would be there to short the pins. If not I don’t know if it would work.

since the whim says that on 14-17 year models a module harness is required for fitment, i would say that he's gonna need that harness to do it. the good news is that it's only $50. go to the p&a page on h-d.com and look up the installation instructions for the whim and the additional harness. that should give you the info you need.

actually, a WHIM harness is required for installation regardless of model year. The difference is the 14-17 models had the option of a CB radio so the harness that comes packaged with the WHIM will not work. Those models require a different harness which must be purchased separately.
In either case the WHIM harness gets plugged into the same connector that the comm system uses for the tank and Tour Pak connector harness. Once a WHIM is installed you can no longer use hard-wired headsets or the ACP plug hack (neither the version that uses the P&A Audio connector or the tank dash headset connector).
Anyway, the point is that the radio doesn't need an additional harness (the GTS just plugs in where the old radio was) so if OP has made a plug to work in the dash connector and his buddy has not installed a WHIM then that plug will also work on his buddy's bike.
you're arguing semantics. 14-17, you have to purchase a harness. 18 up, you don't.
Only if you are installing a WHIM., not if you are trying to use the ACP plug hack.
I'm not arguing semantics, I'm providing context and clarifying something you said that might be misconstrued.
Yes, if he was installing a WHIM he'd have had to buy a different harness than the one that came with the WHIM for his 17 model bike but that's not what he was doing. No harness is needed so saying "i would say that he's gonna need that harness to do it." might be confusing.
I think the point I was making was in the last sentence of my last post. The additional explanation was in case somebody comes across this thread down the road.
